Cooling Issues on 92 Z28
Hello All.
I am having some cooling issues i want to try and get squared away. My car seems to get really hot during stop and go type driving and i want to try and eleminate this. I was thinking about getting a chip for it and with that chip getting a lower temp thermostat and fan switch. Can anyone help point me in the right direction and is there anything else i should try doing? Thanks for the help guys.

Tired of looking at 220+ in stop and go driving? I was too. Here's what worked to cure that for my car... Made sure the radiator was clear of obstructions, rust, scale, etc., good hoses and the air dam was in place. Then, changed the themostat to a 180, replaced the stock fan switch to a 200, and replaced the chip. In stop and go traffic it stays consistant at about 180-185. During the summer with the AC on it rises to about 190-200 but still well below the 220+range.
Please note, I'm not saying that you need to change the chip. I did however change mine. http://www.tpichips.com

The themostat you can purchase at any parts store. The cooler fan switch's are available from a variety of sources, Summit, Jegs, etc. sold by Jet or Hypertech. Some where I read a post that you can purchase them at NAPA? Also, madvet (ya, it's a vet site) sells just the switch or, the kit at a nice price. http://www.madvet.com . The part # is 609-106.
Good luck

my 92 z/28 had problems getting hot, i tried everything, new radiator, water pump, belt, stat , then i found out it did not have the air dam. that 3 inch piece of plastic is very important on these cars.
Yup the airdam is the piece that hangs under the car. Like others I replaced the thermostat and fan switch and now its a constant 180 in both stop and go and open freeway (stock chip). Only downside is the fan motors will have a shorter life span since they will be on more often.

The air dam is still there... i hear it scrape all the time... haha plus i looked at it to see if it was maybe cut down by a previous owner...

i have a ? its prob a stupid one lol, but idk what it is. whats a fan switch and like if were to go w/ a new thermostate and chip would i need one? dave
The fan switch temp determines when the fan(s) will turn on to cool the fluid in the radiator. The stock fan switch is around 220 degrees which is a little too late for most people. A lower temp fan switch will turn the fan(s) on earlier. If you have a lower temp thermostat and a fan switch with the matching temp, good chance your car will maintain that temp instead of going into the 220 range. I'd say do the fan switch before you do any chip.
