Water pump

89 GTA 5.7 with underdrive pulleys. Should I use a stock water pump or a high volume pump?

Using a high volume pump would defeat the purpose of the underdrive pulley.

how does that defeat the purpose?
purpose of high flow pump is better cooling,
purpose of underdrve pulleys is to decrease the parasitic loss from assecories.

Now i have neither, so i'm no pro. But if you had underdrive pulleys, your pump would be flowing less water and therefore lower the effectiveness of your cooling system. Installing a high flow pump would help counteract the lowered cooling performance due to the underdrive pulleys, or am I mistaken somehow?

I see you're from salmon arm... do you ever come out to vancouver for any of the fbody meets?

The underdrive pulley will save energy by moving less water. Then you'll put on a high volume water pump to more more water, which will use more energy. You could accomplish the same thing for less money by not buying an underdrive pulley and high volume pump.

I go to Vancouver fairly often, but not for f-body meets.

So a high volume pump adds extra parasitic loss? I was under the assumption the a high volume pump flows better while not affecting performance at all.

The energy to move the water has to come from somewhere, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

use the high volume pump. i did, and also have an underdrive crank pulley.
