Engine fan missing?

I just picked up a '87 Camaro last week, and I'm already having to dig into it to solve some issues. I'm fairly new with mechanic work, and learning as I go, so bear with me...

I'm in Phoenix, AZ, so the heat here may have a lot to do with it, but it runs quite hot. 220F is pretty average for this car, and from what I've read and been told, average should be 180F, and the fan should kick on around 190F. However, also from what I've seen, there should be an engine fan attached to the water pump, which there is not. There's a fan right behind the radiator, but it's electrical and it never comes on either. My coolant is fine, and I just replaced the thermostat last night. There is also no air intake on the under-body, as I've seen mentioned in a few threads around here.

Comments? Thanks.

The electric fan cools your rad, there's no mechanical fan on your car. I believe the ECM won't turn the fan on until 220F, so that's not a rediculous temperature to be seeing.

The engine is a 2.8L v6. How would I check the fan to confirm it's operational? I let the car get up to 230F and it still didn't turn on.

So theren's no engine fan then. Do I really need it? My dad had the same year and model as I did, and his had the engine fan on it, attached at the water pump. The water pump in mine is new, and there doesn't seem to be a place to even attach a fan.

the 2.8 never came with a fan connected to the water pump. maybe the carb'd ones...I'm not sure about those. but definatly not the FI ones. you can simply hook the fan to any 12v source, or the battery. if it runs tehn you're looking at a bad fuse or relay. the relay is located on the firewall near your brake booster.

The electric fan is the engine fan. Mechanical belt driven fans had gone the way of the dinosaur by 1987.

not to be indifferent but thats false, the 84 2.8L had white plastic fan set, bolted to waterpump, i owned an 84 s/e with 2.8L and t-5, so i know/have been here

you just cant say never, cept for in very few rare cases it seems,

anyways 220 degrees is fine, normal for these cars,

test your fan temp switch and fan motor to see if it even works

good luck
