What should timing be set at? (84 Firebird)

I replaced my stock 305 in my 84 Trans Am with a 350 and swapped over the intake and CC q-jet carb from the 305. The car is running hot and I've been told that the timing may need set. What should the timing be set at for this setup?

Thanks,
Joe

With a 350 set up, you are going to want to run at least 8-9* advanced. As the previous poster said, disconnect your 4-pack wire harness from your distributer first though.

Do I need to make any other adjustments to the car now that it has a 350? Is the ECM compatible and whatnot?

The 350 will run hotter than the 305 simply because it's a bigger motor. However, set your timing and get your carb dialed in to the 350...it will need to be tuned slightly differently but I don't believe too much. Hmm...come to think about it, a CC Q-Jet for a 305 would run lean in a 350...which could cause it to run hotter and run the risk of detonation.

Other than that, I'd start looking at your cooling. Maybe a new radiator or a fan switch that turns the fan on earlier than stock. I've got one now that turns on at 185* instead of the stock 195. Makes a world of difference. Other than that, I can't think of anything. One of the other readers here might be able to offer more/better info.

dose youre car has the single Thermo fan with no shroud? if so you could prob make up a shroud out of some sheet metal, Trust me it will make a differance at a very small cost.

My car has the single non-electric fan with the stock shrouds in place.

Concerning the stock carb running lean on the 350...any suggestions what to do there? I'm afraid I'm still learning about engines and carbs and could use some help. I'm not looking to race this car or seriously amp up the performance - this car is a "Saturday Night Cruiser", but I want it to run dependably. I'm also getting code 13 for the O2 sensor - I replaced it, reset the ecm, and it's still throwing that code. All this started when I replaced the 305!

Anyways, back to the carb - should I replace it with a CC q-jet for a 350? Please help! I'd like to get this car running properly this year.

Joe

You can either buy a new carb for a 350 or simply re-jet/rebuild the one you have.

As for your code 13...I'm not sure which that is. I don't know if your ECM is re-programmable but it's looking for 305 stuff...now that you've got the 350, it's going to be a bit freaked out. You can have Autozone check it out but I'll bet it has to do with switching to the 350. Your exhaust output is different with the 350 (More of it) so your readings will be off a bit which is why you're getting an error.

LOL! Who told you that nonsense? And by the way, the stock elcetric fan turns on a wee bit higher than 195. Try 236*, and he has an LG4 car, which means clutch fan.

Well, when I sent my carb to Jet performance to have it rebuilt that's what they said. If I went with a 350 they would re-jet the carb because the stock jets were a bit small, which could cause a lean issue. I guess I should have said "Could" cause a lean situation. As for the 236...everything I'd been able to find on it said it turned on around 195. I guess I need to do some more reading.
