How to change out an A/C clutch

I can't find any articles on it nor do I see how to do it in the Chilton's. I'm sure it isn't hard but can anyone give some help. Thanks.

Guro

Do you know if you have an R-4 "V Groove Pully" or an R-4 "Poly Groove Pully" type of compressor? See Figures 1 and 2 in the 1 attachment for the difference between them. I just want to upload the attchments for the type of compressor you have. Attachment 2 shows the special tools you may need to work on an R-4 type compressor. Note not all tools are used for every task. Source of the attachments is the 1982 Camaro Shop manual.

You may want to right click on the attachemnts and "Save As" to your computer. Then you can use Windows or other picture viewing software to rotate and view the sheets, while zooming in for a better view.

Thanks man! You gave me the antidote I was looking for.

It looks like a major pain in the a$s considering all the tools involved and consider I don't have all of them. I think I'm gonna poke around the salvage yard first. For $35 a compressor, it just seems like it's so much easier.

The compressor all have CFC's in them, there is a reward up to 10,000 for anyone turning in someone releasing CFC. With that said are you positive the clutch is gone. If the car is low on refridgerant the clutch will not turn.

I would say it is simply because when it starts to spin, it starts to smoke.

It's as if it was leaking freon. Whenever it starts to spin up, you can see it coming out from the front of the clutch.
