Broken AC/Heater?
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with my AC/Heater. It seems the problems with it started when we found the plug for the belt-driven part unplugged and plugged it back in. If you turn either on, it smells like something burning, so I always turn it off. I think it could be the belt making that smell. I would turn it on to just run it and see what's up, but last time I went to do that, it stalled the car AND killed the battery. And I turned it on the other day as a quick test, and it made this HORRIBLE screeching/scraping noise, and it immediately was turned off. Could the plug that "feeds" it be in backwards? Or is there only one was it can go on?

It sounds like someone wired some things wrong. If your belt was making a burning smell you would also hear it. It sounds like you have a short so If it is me I stop plugging in what ever you are plugging in to get the smell. Is the plug you are talking about for the blower motor? If you plug it in and it makes the noise you are talking about, sounds like the motor is shot. Blower motors are cheap, get a new one and also get a wiring diagram for your car and check your feeds before you connect your new blower motor.

Yeah, whatever is belt-driven is what's plugged in. I'm not sure if that plug can go in two ways, maybe I should take a picture... When I got the car, it was unplugged, and it never smelled.

Re: Broken AC/Heater?
All right, I just tested it with the hood open, and my dad said the belt (power steering/AC belt) was smoking. That's what I smelled. And it drops down so low in RPMs it would seem like it's going to stall. So, perhaps it's some form of belt issue? Too tight? I had the belt tightened before, and the AC thing (god, I wish I could remember what it's called) moved about an inch over.

You might check the accessories that are run off that belt you say is smoking, it sounds like something is frozen, either your air conditioning compressor or the power steering pump. Loosen up the belt enough to remove it and turn each accessory by hand just to make sure they all rotate properly and then check your belt carefully and replace it if necessary.

Well, the power steering works fine, and nothing smokes when the AC/Heat is off. It never smoked when the AC compressor was disconnected from power, it just blew warm air.

Re: Broken AC/Heater?
So, unplugged the compressor today, works great. Actually, my dad stalled the car testing the compressor with it plugged in. A/C compressor was absolutely siezed up. Heat works great now, I could care less about A/C right now, I probably could just take it off it I really wanted to, for a few more ponies. I just spent $950, and I'm not spending $400 for the luxury of A/C. I have t-tops and windows. If it's hot and it rains, guess I'm gonna roast.

MP81, glad to hear you got your problem figured out. I have been replacing hoses, vacuum lines, dual fans, reworking an LS1 fan shroud and doing some re-wiring on my `88 Iroc the last 2 weeks, got it ready to fire up and nothing when I turned the key. After an hour I found one of the weather pack connectors was disconnected. I wish all problems were that easy to solve.
