A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
Im thinking about removing my entire A/c system on my 5.7tbi. (2 reasons--weight reduction and power adder in the near future.) Has anybody done this? Any major/minor problems after doing this? Any plugs to FILL?
i need the delete pulley and the radiator delete for the firewall i think.

Do not remove the heat. You will need it for those days that our windows fog up. AC is pointless. My AC is the windows down and stepping down with my right foot!

I guess im in the learning stages of moddifying.
I didnt know the heat was connected to the a/c system
(i know that might sound lame but im still a thirdgen student. lol). But I would like to keep the heat (winter in utah is bone chilling) and replace the compressor with a delete pulley. Then get rid of any thing that i dont need.

anybody recognize this part? do i need this if i keep the heat?

the biggest thing about removing the evaporator case is access to the pass side of the engine... plugs take 15mins in my car for all 8

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
ok ok folks....last question
.
so if i want to keep the heat, what do i NOT want to pull from the engine bay? Where is this heater box located......
it appears that i will taking out the compressor, the little radiator in front of the BIG radiator, cooling lines and the black box on upper portion of the firewall(passenger side). i think im in the right direction.

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
thats an aftermarket piece someone produced to take the place of the hard to find !LE ac delete boxes. You will need to keep the blower, the speed control coils and the relay. pretty much the heat is produced in the heater coil under the dash, kinda like a radiator in homes, and the blower pushes the air through the vents.
the big black box on the firewall is the blower box, the air moves through it pushing heat or ac depending on the settings, it or some form of it needs to stay to facilitate the movement of air. the wiring for the blower needs to stay and the blower motor has to stay. everything else can go

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
here is a pic, this is my origional setup before everything was re-done. I modified the lower half of the stock blower box, did a lot of fiberglass work and came up with this.

you may notice that the plate with the speed control coil things is gone, i didnt know what they were for and chopped them out
. So i have 1 speed, high, but thats really all i need

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
that gives me an idea on the GREAT amount of room i will have....but thats besides the point right now.
i might just swap in the delete pulley and yank out the compressor and lines for now until i get an alternative to fill that huge hole.

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
Another alternative is getting a stock A/C delete blower box. I found one in a junkyard on an '84 4-cylinder Camaro. Make sure and get the box, the blower motor and the blower fan, as they are very similar, but slightly different than the A/C blower motors/fans.
You just take all the A/C hardware off the car from the firewall forward, and bolt on the A/C delete box and plug in the fan. All of your heater and defroster stuff will still work fine, as the heater core under the dash is still getting hot water from the radiator.
I also opted to re-route the belt instead of running the A/C delete pully, but I don't recommend this, as I've been plagued with squeaky belts and still ruin alternators because of the extra tension required on the belts being run this way.

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
i appreciate this info guys.....
everything under my hood is new except for the parts with pullies attached to them. these are the parts that keep causing my car to get towed. so if i can simply eliminate the ac and smog. Then buy all new pullies,
then that should free up power, stop my gatorback belt from tearing (im on my 3rd belt within 1500miles------>they all got shredded by the marvelous works of the a/c compressor) and give me more room for those shiny turbos.

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
If you decide to remove the ac related connectors and wire from the wiring harness make sure to insulate the old harness pins, if they somehow get grounded the fan will run constantly. Found that out the hard way myself.

Re: A/C removal....anybody have problems after removal?
HELLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP. ok here it goes....
I just got things under way. I took the Ac compressor out along with the condenser and that silver cylinder thing. The box and blower are still attached to the FIREWALL.
i fired the 91' up with ac delete.....and
NOW MY single COOLING FAN DOESNT WORK
. And the idle isnt smooth anymore. MAYBE A GROUNDing ISSUE? HOW DO I PLUG the two wires that used to go in the ac compressor?
