Waterpump or fan?
My 84 camaro, 355 iron heads, stock style radiator, chrome half circle fan shroud, aluminum flex fan, stock waterpump and pulleys, thermostat or no thermostat it has an overheating problem, only on the freeways at speeds of 70+ mph or when sitting and idling. At freeway speeds (no od btw) it slowly overheats, but once it gets to 210*+ it starts creeping up in temp and doesn't come down, unless you shut it down and let it cool off.
i have no idea how old the waterpump is, but it doesn't leak, and the car doesn't overheat as long as your not sitting still or running it hard.
i've had a couple of ideas on how to get the temp down and stay down one of them being making a sheet metal fan shroud and a single 15 or 16" electric puller fan.
what would cool better a shroud that covers the entire back of the radiator with the fan in the center or, just mounting the fan on the radiator no shroud.
I really want to be able to bury the throttle on this thing or be bumper to bumper in cruise night traffic and have no overheating problems. I flushed the radiator and put in new 50/50 mix antrifreeze and that helped some but not enough for me so what should i try first?

Re: Waterpump or fan?
You can remove the rad cap, and start the car - when it runs warm enough (t-stat opens) you'll see the water flowing into the radiator - that will answer the water pump question.
Is the fan running? Plug 12v directly to it and see.
Is the fan relay functioning?
Is the fan switch in the pass head connected and working?
Do you have the air dam under the car installed? (30+ mph the vacuum created by air dam should cool car enough with no fan)

Don't have the electric fan. just an aluminum mechanical flex fan.
No air dam, but that will not solve the idle temp overheating problems.

You could ditch the miserable fixed flex fan and use a decent stock 5 or 7 blade fan with a properly-working clutch and a full shroud, or you could swap in an electric fan setup.

Re: Waterpump or fan?
The flex fan at 70 mph and above is useless with the RPMs the engine it turning, this is where you must have an air dam to reflect the air into the radiator.
I have seen flex fans that have have been run at high RPMs so much that they do not flex back to the position where they pull the most air.
Flex fans may look better but the stock fan is better. The best solution is electric fans.

And if you run an electric, there are controllers available from cheap ($30) to expensive ($100) that are easy to install. The more expensive ones come with options such as manual always on/off switches, adjustable temp settings, etc.

What do you guys think about this fan, i heard spal was one of the best.
Another option i heard about was the ford taurus fan. But i like this one better.

I'd be more inclined to find a stock or stock replacement setup so that you don't have to worry about figuring out your own mounting.
