running HOT in traffic

I just replaced the thermostat with 160 (prev owner had it removed), hose (which was leaking), and neck piece(which had a hole from corrosion on aluminum neck) all replaced flushed and refilled the radiator with new coolant also heater control valve was leaking (it wasnt original the thing looked way diff than stock) so i remoed it and ran a str8 hose but seems like it still over heats when in traffic on the freeway the temp is lil over 100 but then when rolling through Miami traffic the temp shows passed 220 its a dual fan on ,my 92 Z 350 TPI and i believe one is for AC and they have 2 speeds, so passngr side fan never on, i assume its the AC since i dont have the AC hooked up but the driver side fan is always on from the time the car is started, so im confused whats happening here, please help.

Re: running HOT in traffic

Well your problem is with the fans then, he probably grounded it so it runs ALL the time, which is not good. Youll need to get a fan switch and hook it back up, and you can wire the second fan to come on when u turn on the ac, or even wire a manual switch to it. I wouldnt use antifreeze if I lived in miami either, straight water plus a water pump lubricant/corrosion inhibitor would probably drop the temp ~10 degrees.

Im ordering my new engine today ) anyway, Im curious as well to hear about more from this thread.

Re: running HOT in traffic

Jet offers a fan switch that kicks the fan(s) on at a cooler temperature. The stock setting is set to turn the fan on around the 220 mark, so It could be normal. Your current switch could be bad and turning your fan on too late. When the fan comes on does your temp decrease? What is the condition of your radiator and cooling system? When is the last time you had a good flush?

Re: running HOT in traffic

To me, and remember, this is only my opinion and not fact, but your cooling system is not up to par and thus your fan is not cut out for the cooling duty it is handed. Hook up your second fan as an always on as well, even if its temporary to see if it helps. Like I said in my previous post, ask yourself those questions.

Re: running HOT in traffic

You should make sure your temp gauge is accurate,100 seems a bit to low these engines should operate at around 210 give or take a few degrees, like Traviz said the fan should come on at 220,make sure your gauge is correct then go from there.

Re: running HOT in traffic

First thing I did was have the radiator flushed and new coolant put in and also added a bottle of Royal Purple Ice.
Belive it or not that droped the Temp 10 Deg on the hyw & city. Also have your fans, thermostat (180 deg) and air dam in place and working. .

Re: running HOT in traffic

Snip, TraviZ is right about changing your fan switch. Jet part # 60600 turns on the secondary fan at about 200 and off at 185. Since the ECM sees the secondary fan on, it turns on the primary fan so the car cools down quick. The key to getting temps down consistently is to install a 4th gen or after market fan shroud. I modified one from a 4th gen LT1 and if I was to do it over I would use the shroud from the LS1, not as much fabrication to make it fit. I also used after market fans. There are some great cooling system mods in the "Search" function on this site. There is one from 'firebirdjones LS1 fans'. He used a complete 4th gen system and loves it. He even has pics with his instructions on how to do it. Search for cooling system mods and there is a bunch but the key to it all is the fan shroud.

I went flex-a-lite compact fans, they are the awesomest thing ever.

Re: running HOT in traffic

I would not recommend replacing your coolant with water. Water boils at 212 but the stock system is not set to turn the fans on until 220 and since you think you may be overheating you may be getting hotter than that.

Re: running HOT in traffic

Yeah but dont forget that its pressurized and the boiling point is a lot higher. I would still use a LITTLE antifreeze like 25% antifreeze 75% water+ a pump lube/corrision inhibitor. Alotta people think that because antifreeze raises the boiling point that it cools better, but in actuality straight water cools much better.
