Is my fan shroud missing?

I have purchased an incomplete 87 L98 with the dual electric fans. Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a fan shroud on these fans? I would really appreciate pics of another complete example so I can see what might be missing. Thanks all.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

if it's dual electric fans, I would assume it just has a small shroud that basically just holes the radiator in place. Mech. fan shrouds have a big overhang, elec. fans have smaller ones becasue there's no need for that much coverage. Is there a plastic piece that bolts onto the top of the core support that holes the radiator? If so, that's your fan shroud.

Try and snap a pic of yours so we can make sure, Im at work. all my pics are on my personal PC

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

I don't have any pics of it, but my '87 L98 has no real shroud on the dual fans. You basically just have the fans pressed up against the radiator, without much free air around them.

That description is accurate.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

You guys are awesome, that picture is exactly what mine looks like. Thanks for your help. Also, my car runs at 150 deg. when driving 40mph +, and in stop and go can get as high as 240 deg. Is this typical for these?

I haven't drove mine much since I bought it so I couldn't tell ya. Mine is staying parked until I get the bugs worked out of it.

The dash guage can be horribly inaccurate. If it's truly getting to 240, that's a little high.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

Here's my 87 GTA. No shroud really, just a ring around the fan tips & the plastic mounting bracket.

Are both your fans (or do you have 1?) coming on? I had the secondary fan die a month ago & it regularly got hot. Maybe 270/280-ish

Very typical. Do a search on cooling and you'll find alot of info on what you can do about that.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

Running at 150 it too cold. Not even getting into closed loop tuning at that temp, I think. Should be at the 180-200 at highway speeds.

240 is the cutoff point for me. Not overheating, but pushing it.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

I just tested my coolant mix and its boiling point is around 285 deg. I suspect that I have too much coolant in the mix.
I have not checked the secondary fan yet however I read a thread that said it would not come on unless the A/C was on. My A/C has no refridgerant so I suspect that my second fan will not come on at all for now.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

Test the Secondary fan by switching the plugs on the relays. Then, then Secondary fan will operate as the Primary. That's how I eliminated the relay as the culprit. That way you can narrow the search to fan or relay in one test.

Despite the FSM showing only 1 relay, I found 2, side by side. One for each fan. The Primary fan worked on either relay, Secondary wouldn't work on either one.

That second fan should come on at temps of about 240ish if I remember correctly. If the fan still doesn't come on with your AC on then something is wrong and explains why in stop and go traffic it gets up that high.

Test the fan to see if the motor is still good, if it is then its hopefully the relay test it and if its faulty replace it.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

The fan motor is good, I do not know where the relays are located, I do not have a manual.

Re: Is my fan shroud missing?

Thanks to all of you for the help. I have discovered that my relays are OK. I checked my temp range closer and it ranges from 160-240 with an 80 deg outside temp. The lower when freeway cruising and the the higher in stop and go.
I noticed that my secondary fan does come on when the engine is warm and off with the ignition on. So they both work, I just have not seen them come on together. Do you suppose it is because my A/C is not working?
