Cooling fan wont turn on, New relay. Advice?

Hey guys I just finished my engine rebuild/ total resto on my 92 camaro but I am having one problem with it overheating. it all begins when It gets hot, the fan wont turn on.(typical right?) I have tried trouble shooting it and replaced My cooling fan Relay thinking it was the problem but it seems the fan is still not getting any power. I also troubleshooted and plugged up 2 wires from the positive+negative got the fan to turn on from directly hooking it up to the battery. If anyone could send me in the right direction It would be greatly appreciated. This is all I have left to start driving

Thanks.

You say its not turning on when it gets hot. That indicates a problem with coolant temperature fan switch or whatever the hell switch it is.

It could also be resistance in the lines. Heat within the engine compartment will increase ohms in the lines. Clean the connector and solder in some new wires.

I went around this problem and just wired up a fan switch that goes to my dash. The positive from the battery goes to my fan and the negative from the fan goes to the switch in the dash, which then goes to ground. I rigged it up right under the headlight switch, looks totally factory too.

On the passenger side of engine between spark plugs 6 & 8, you should find the "Cooling Fan Switch". Its brass sensor, used to turn on your fan(s) at a certain temp(220-230's). I would atleast take a look at it to make sure that the wire(1) is connected, or it could be a bad sensor($20-$40 for a new sensor).

If you want stock temps- buy AC Delco
If you want aftermarket(like me)- buy Hypertech #4026(on at 177* off 166*) or #4028(on at 200* off at 185*)

Ok guys I have been doing some reading and have come to the same conclusion. I like the idea of getting the hypertech. where did you order it from or is it available from the local parts store?

I will certainly keep you guys posted on this.

Where to buy a Hypertech Switch?

1. Summit
2. Your local speed shop
3. Ebay
4. Hypertech web site

I don't think Autozone, Pep Boys, part stores like these may not carry them, but you could always walk in and ask if they could order you one!!!!

Well so I ordered the fan switch from jegs, Wired it in, installed it and turned the car on. It works flawlessly now. keeps it right around 190-200. Its kind of hard to read the gauge because of the gauge's range but it works. Thanks Very much Paul.

Also buying a radiator cap with a Thermometer built in it to get an actual reading on temperatures.
The one I just purchased.

The Switch I bought was the hypertech #4028 It came with an actual wire that goes around the header which gets charred easily and the switch itself.

It was a bit pricey but worth every penny in my book.

Re: Cooling fan wont turn on, New relay. Advice?

It is alright, It provides a general explanation of the coolant temp. Although its the coolant tempature coming back into the radiator. so its usually about cool. In my opinion it was worth it just in case the gauge goes caput or is off, but with this new switch, it keeps the engine really really cool. and I dont have to really worry about it
