weird issue with dual cooling fans...no power at main orange wire, will this work?

battled this awhile ago, it just fixed itself...

then today, they quit working...when i noticed my temp was at 280!!!! luckily nothing got hurt, i jumped on the eway right away and chilled it down back to 180, then pulled over..

checked wiring, sure enough, no 12 volts at the main orange wire going to both fan relays..

i traced the heavy 10ga orange wire from the fan relays at hte pass side headlight area...they run along frame rail, then up and over and across the hvac box, then it looks like down to starter area...

i was in a pinch, and snipped that wire, then ran it directly to the battery just to get the car home...

ODD part is, the voltage drop isnt as high anymore...and the fans seem to spin MUCH faster...

i planned on putting a fuse there tomorrow, and just leaving it like that...would this be ok?

also, i purchased flexalite's VSC controller, would it be ok to power the fan relays using the VSC?

example...

using the FAN OUTPUT wires on the vsc, and sending the 12 volts to the constant HOT orange wire going to each relay?

1.) fusing the orange wire is fine, Im curious as to why you had no power on the orange wire...blown fuse perhaps.
2.)I dont have specs on the VSC controller....but yes you can use the output as long as its fused at the main power source as well you may want a manual shut off to the relays to keep fans from turning on without warning if your working on the car

fan fuse under the dash was fine, has never blown.

From what im told by flexalite, there newest vsc which was just shipped to me, actually has a button on it, to kill all power to the fans to prevent that...

thats good you could kill the power thats what you want,I believe there is a fusible link for the orange wire maybe thats gone.
you could still bypass as long as you put in a fuse

The flexalite system shouldn't need the relays at all - mine didn't. Mine wired in without use of any of the stock wiring, except the pigtail to the fan. 4+ years later no problems at all.

your right it dosent require the relays just go from fan output on vsc to fans

i know it doesnt need the relays, but i didnt feel like rewiring everything..

tapping and sending it to the orange wire at the relay is just sooooooooooooooooooooooo easy lol

There's really nothing to rewire with the flexalite - just need a power wire from the power dist center (beside battery), a ground (self tapping screw wherever you mount the controller), and some wiring to extend the fan pigtail wires to the controller - it's a very simple unit.

Your car is also TPI - which means the ECM has control over one of the dual fans - if you reuse the stock wiring then you still might have issues since the ECM is going to make the ground for that fan relay when/if IT thinks the fan needs to run, which will override your settings on the flexalite unit, defeating the whole purpose in having the flexalite.

If using the flexalite, I'd recommend wiring it as they describe in the instructions - short cuts only ever get you into trouble. Besides, that's 2 relays you can now get rid of and clean up the bay a bit!

it is quite an easy install by eliminating the relays, as camaronewbie says just follow the instructions.

i know its an easy install, i have one on my jeep grand cherokee..

main reasoning was, i dont wanna remove/cut the factory fan harness...

my car is somewhat "desirable" if you will, and rather clean!

That I don't know about - I'll leave that for a TPI wiring guru...

you could leave the harness pick up two new fan connectors from the dealer(I recently did for my fans) or other supplier tie back the existing ones with tie wraps and wire them up according to the instructions (vsc)
