Need to install missing A/C parts. Please help me identify them

Hi All,

I have an 87 Iroc w/the 305 TPI. My car has the factory AC system, but with some parts missing. I'd like to replace them, but am unsure of model numbers. It currently has:
  • Compressor mounting bracket but NO Compressor and no additional brackets w/belt tensioner adjusters
  • Accumulator/Drier
  • Condenser or Evaporator? (the part in front of the radiator)
  • Partial lines
Doing research, I've learned the majority opinion is to replace with new, or at least remanufactured parts. I've also seen that the newer parts are either R4 or 134, if that sounds familiar to you.

The assistance I am looking for from you is this:
  1. I am looking to replace the compressor; what should I look for in terms of make/model/options, such as the R4 mentioned above and also, do I need a compressor with a clutch?
  2. I'm going to replace the hoses, but have seen that there are two sets; one larger diameter set attached to a mount near the compressor bracket and then smaller lines with an orfice. Please direct me to the proper items to get and do the larger hoses come attached to the mounting brackets which I need to buy, or is that a seperate item?
  3. Lastly, has anyone ordered these parts all from one place at a good deal, or, have they been bought in pieces from various places?
Thanks in advance!

Honastly, It's gonna sound crazy but I pieced together an a/c system from pick your part including the condenser and lines, never a leak. a/c lines rarely go bad, and if they did, you can usually see visual failure. Otherwise the lines new can be quiet expensive. When my compressor went out, I went to local part store and bought a new one for $300. DO NOT get a remanufactured or rebuilt, I've seen sooo many fail it's not funny, these R4 compressors are known for internal failures, usually the darn rear seal. as for clutch, it came with the compressor in my case. As for the orifice I'm not sure on your year, but I believe mines crimped into the lines, but that's a 91. Hope this helps you.

If my Iroc didn't come with a AC, Can I put one in? I have a 91 with Ac, parts car.

Yes, but you'd need all the parts, including the lines, the compressor, the evaporator, the accumulator, the condensor, the complete A/C box for the firewall (should be easy to get, everyone wants to delete A/C), and the controls for inside the car. Then you'd have to wire it up (high pressure switch and clutch power leads).

You still might have issues in the end, since the A/C is going to rob power ... the ECM was programmed to sense the A/C on (from the high pressure switch I think), and thus boost the gas to compensate the idle with.

I just pulled the A/C from my GTA ('88 305 TPI). I'd be willing to bet everythings the same. Everything looked to be in good shape, but didn't have a charge. Let me know if you need any misc. parts, or all of them for that matter.

Can you post the pics of the parts you removed???
