Stock Fan Current Draw

i have a single stock 89 camaro fan. Wanted to know what the current draw is on it. i want to upgrade to a dual fan that each fan takes about 20amps. Thinking of using my stock relay for one of the fans and then installing another for the other fan.

The stock fan draws about 10 amps.

Re: Stock Fan Current Draw

10 amps? That's all... I thought it would be bigger cause the relay is so big lol. Well that's good to know. Looks like I will be taking that out. Thanks

Re: Stock Fan Current Draw

one more question, would a 30amp Bosch relay be ok for a fan that draws 20amps?

Relaying Information

A 30 amp relay should be fine.

However I use 70 amp relays, but that’s me, I tend to design things as if they are going into outer space and never want to repair them.

When fans start, they draw a lot more for a second or so.

Happy Racing!

Re: Relaying Information

The stock fan can draw more than 20 amps on start up, more if the voltage is low. I've always had a problem with people wiring them permanently on. Having that fan start up load hit a battery before the motor's running increases the amp draw due to the lower system voltage usually AT THE SAME TIME you're hitting the starter switch. Huge drain.

I'd recommend using two of the stock relays. You probably won't find anything cheaper new and you can yank the stock relay and associated wiring out of JYs all day.

Re: Relaying Information

Could also consider a seperate fan controller. I run a Flex-a-lite controller, and it's been the best $100 I've ever spent. Comes with all necessary wiring so none of the old stock wiring is used, easy to install, adjustable temp controls, and provisions for manual on/off switches. The controller itself has built-in relays, and it starts fan(s) at 65% of power to reduce the initial power draw at startup, then kicks in at 100% after a minute or two if extra cooling is needed.

Re: Relaying Information

Yeah, does cost more - but I've been running my Flex-a-lite controller for over 3 years with no issues at all.

And since it runs when it should, and always where I adjust it to run, I never have any cooling issues at all with a stock single factory fan.
