Cooling fan issue
If this problem has already been posted could someone please point me in the direction of it but the electric fan on my 85 iroc will kick on for a second and shut back off. The volts drop down from 14 to 12 while its engaged and then a second later it kicks back off and the volts go back to normal. Is this a wiring problem or is the fan motor taking a crap? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cooling fan issue
ok so new scenario, i just put a flex-a-lite fan controller on and it popped a 20, 25, and 30 amp fuse. Bypassed the fuses all together and the fan started running but the box then started to smoke. Any idea whats goin on at this point? I think my only other option is an entirely new fan but I don't wanna buy it and that not be the problem so i'd just like a lil conformation from somebody before i go that route.

Re: Cooling fan issue
It appears that the circuit that runs the fan has a fault to earth. My suggestion would be to run a hot wire through a line that runs from the ignition when on.Run that through to your controller through a fuse and all should be good. I had a similair problem where my fan ceased causing the fuse not to blow and burned out the wiring.I had to run a new hot wire and bought a thermatic controller and all works good.

Re: Cooling fan issue
Further to that check out this link to wire up the fan correctly. This is a separate circuit to the vehicle one.

I wonder if there is still a thirdgen out there besides mine that isn't wired up all ghetto. I would've just fixed it the right away, not necessarily installed a whole new kit to try and bypass a probably (easy) fix.
If I were you, I would run a brand new power/ground wire straight to the battery, andsee if the wiring burns up. If so, your fan has a short in it.

It will also do that when you turn the lights on or the blower fan or anything that uses electricity..
Just replace the stock fan motor with a new replacement motor if you feel the stock fan isnt pulling enff air.

Re: Cooling fan issue
whats ghetto about an adjustable fan controller? you shoulda saw all the wiring before I got it, if anything i'm trying to clean it up
Re: Cooling fan issue
It's ghetto because it doesn't need to be adjustable, and the factory way of cooling works if you just fix it the right way. I bought one of those adjustable fan controllers before too, so I'm not saying I'm innocent, but to be honest they are a workaround for technical incompetence.

Re: Cooling fan issue
to each its own i guess because you didn't see what i started off with when i bought my car. whoever had it before me did a hack job and instead of spending time researching exactly how it was originally wired from the factory and with advice from fellow 3rd gen owners on this forum this is the direction they told me to go in so if my car is ghetto because i can adjust at what temperture my fan turns on so be it.
Re: Cooling fan issue
I don't mean to be offensive, I just can't stand when people just add to the hackjobish #$^^ I see in these cars. My first thirdgen I had was like this, and fixing it was a damn nightmare in itself....so I can empathize. So when I see people wiring up "switches" to turn their fan on manually and what not, that is just absurd when it's faster, simpler, and cheaper to fix the initial issue.
Not sure if it's like this on your year, but on my 92, all there is a fan switch sensor (grounds relay circuit once it reaches X temperature), a relay, and the fan.
Ground the wire from the sensor onto the starter housing to check the sensor switch.
Check the relay for any faults (apply +/-) to the control circuit to "activate" the eletro-mechanical switch, which you will hear a "click" if its working.
Check fan to make sure it spins with power/ground applied by jumper wires.
Not too hard and very cheap.
Sensor switch? $9
Relay? $10~
Fan? $20 at local junkyard?
Replacing each of this is much faster than wiring in aftermarket or manual override switch.
