87 Iroc 350 TPI waterpump FLOW?

I need to replace the water pump which is pissing out the drainage hole.
Anyway I have a serpentine belt and 1 COG belt and the parts store telling me clockwise rotation or counter clockwise???

This is the question.

I want to put on an Edelbrock Alum. but I dont want to purchase the wrong one!

Can anyone help with this as it has to be a quik turn around job and I won't be able to take the core off before purchase.

I have been told by the dealer that there is a GM Perfomance Alum is reverse for that year??

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!

Re: 87 Iroc 350 TPI waterpump FLOW?

1987 was the transition year. You should have a serp belt that runs from water pump to alternator to crank, and a V-belt that runs from crank to P/S pump to water pump, and a second V belt from A/C to water pump to crank, right?

If it's like that (a serp belty AND one or 2 V-belts, then you have a standard rotation water pump (clockwise).

The ONLY cars that had reverse rotation pumps (counter-clockwise) were the 1988+ cars that had only a single serp belt that connected everything with one belt.

Hope that helps!

Your in correct with what you wrote, you didn't explain how a serp and a "V" belt can both run on a waterpump and alt???
I know for a fact the only "V" belt I have runs the AC??
So there goes that theory.

CAN someone please tell me if the SERP belt runs on the smooth side of the water pump vs the ribbed side can you tell the rotation??
Thanks

Re: 87 Iroc 350 TPI waterpump FLOW?

Well, I grabbed the stuff off a 1987 car for mine, since I wanted to get rid of the serpentine setup. But there might be some differences.

This I know for a FACT!!! Basically, what everyone refers to as a "serpentine" car only has ONE belt that runs everything - and these weren't produced until 1988. So ... If you have more than one belt, of any kind, then you need a standard clockwise rotation water pump. Also, our cars take LONG water pumps (the "shorts" were from the 1960's).

Re: 87 Iroc 350 TPI waterpump FLOW?

indeed, all pre-'88 v8 thirds use standard CW rotation
water pumps-3 different belt setups used on v8 thirds;
-'82 -early'85 all v-belt
-mid-'85 thru '87 v-belt with multigroove belt for W/P
and alternator
-'88-92 serpentine
I have had the edelbrock pump on my car since about
1998 and it has been really good

mine has a serpentine setup. so your saying that mine has to be counter clockwise? and i can tell this by looking at it and seeing which way it spins, correct? might sound dumb but i never knew there was a difference till recently.

if its for your 91, then yes you have the counterclock wise pump, also known as the reverse rotation pump.
