Should I re-locate my tranny cooler?

I've had overheating problems for the last few years, and this year my car kept chugging and stopping during dead stopped traffic. My stock temp gauge was screwy louis and the news from purchase in 01' and I've tried to fix it several times to no avail. I do not want to risk blowing a head gasket since I've already re-done the top end of the motor 3 times in the last 5 years.

Anyway I made a post about radiators and such and was shown a sticky about Champions...I made the plunge. I bought a Champion 3 Row radiator, an AutoMeter 3 gauge pillar pod, AutoMeter full sweep C2 temp, fuel pressure & trans temp gauges to match and am going to install them next week when I have time.

My question is my B&M trans cooler is currently mounted directly in front of my radiator with pass-through zip ties. The guy in my last thread said not to do this as it leads to overheating (which is what my car is doing).

Where should I re-locate this thing then? This was installed by a speed shop back in 03' and I thought they knew what they were doing.

I do not have A/C, Smog, Heat, etc. What do you guys recommend for mounting a trans cooler? I bought it because I had a transgo shift kit put in and didnt want my trans to explode. The trans/motor has 80,000 on it now.

thanks for any input!

Steve

I also have a champion radiator and a B&M cooler ziptied infront of the rad. So far from standing still its fine (LT1 Swap 98% done). The real test is on the road.

Most will reccomend to seperate it. I run a cooler for the 4l60e for my Yank 3600 stall. I will be keeping an eye on this thread but I will go ahead and say its not the cause of the problem.

Also how does the gauge work for trans temp? Plugs into the test port?

Yep, the sending unit taps right into the test port. I've read some posts that it will not be 100% correct vs. tapping into the pan but I don't mind it being off by a few degrees, its not a big deal as long as I'm close.

I just said screw it, it's time for proper gauges so I can diagnose my problem. If I need to hard-wire my secondary fan I will do so but I want to see exactly whats going on first. I just don't know where to re-mount my tranny cooler if its helping my car overheat.

As for a Yank stall..wow these things are great and so is the customer service! Glad to see you are reaping the benefit. 2 years ago my flexplate broke and I thought the sound was coming from the converter and I bitched out Yank and they were so apologetic and waiting for me to send them my converter for replacement...I was so embarrassed when I found my flexplate to be broken all along the bolt pattern lol.

Re: Should I re-locate my tranny cooler?

I mounted mine with fans on it, under the battery, in front of the passenger wheel. mainly only because I have a/c still and did not want to put it up there. I really dont think thats your problem. But I do recomend instead of having the zip ties go thru the radiator. take some flat metal and mount it to that a few inches in front of the radiator, and put an electric fan on it to cool it down. That's what I would do.

I mounted my B&M cooler to the front of the radiator support so there is about an inch of clearance between the cooler and the radiator. Seems to work for me.

That's where I mounted my B&M oil cooler. For my tranny cooler I got a frame rail cooler like this one:

I mounted it to the bottom of my front bumper support. It is on the underside of the front bumper where the air flows up into the radiator. Completely out of site and out of the way of rocks or other road debris.
