Help..temperature gauge died
I have a 92 Camaro RS with a 305 (e). My radiator fan stopped working this summer, forcing me to hardwire it. (after replacing the fan, fuse, relays, coolant temperature sensor, etc). Then about a week later the temp gauge on my dash stopped working. It activates when you turn the ignition on, so its not the gauge itself. I bought another part, the temperature sending unit, but i cannot locate this sensor anywhere on my engine. The book shows it being on the drivers side cylinder head, but it is not there.
Anyone who knows the location of this would be an extreme help!!! Thank you for taking the time to read this.

on the 305, theres 3 "sensors" dealing with the cooling system.
theres one on the driver side head, between #1 and #3 cylinders. its the temp sending unit that runs the gauge. there should be a dark green wire going to it.
the next one is on the front of the intake. its the coolant temp sensor. its tells the ECM what the water temp is. it should have a 2 prong connector with a yellow and black wire
the 3rd is the fan switch. it grounds the fan relay when the water temp reaches a certian temp, and turns on the fan. its located on the passanger side head between #6 and #8 cylinders. i looks a lot like a knock sensor and should have a black, squeeze type plug on it. i forget the wire color but its a single wire.

Re: Help..temperature gauge died
chances are your fan switch went bad, and thats why your fan stopped working. the gauge problem could be a bad sender, or it could just be unplugged or have a broken/melted wire.

Re: Help..temperature gauge died
Travis, i appreciate your knowledgeable help. Heres the deal. The one that is supposed to be on the drivers side head is not there. That is where everyones info claims it should be. I have purchased the part. My wiring diagram in Chiltons does not even show the part as existing. I replaced the fan switch, relays, motor, temp sensor on the manifold and everything else so far. I am to the point that the engine is coming out this winter, brand new 350 with digital dash sounds like a good fix!!
Thanks for the (attemted) help folks!!

is there a single dark green wire going to any sensor on the engine or maybe in the radiator that looks like this?

Ironically, there is a sensor in the radiator, but it has never had a wire going to it. That is the sensor i bought. (the pic you posted)
Another interesting development....i just put a new blower fan in, which stopped working at the same time as the temp gauge. No response from the new fan, im beginning to wonder if there is a bigger electrical problem developing in this car.

Finally found it, they put it on the low end of the block on the drivers side. Just figured id let you know for future reference. The wire got pulled off of it somehow.
