I have decided to try the Ford Taurus cooling fan in place of my two electric fans. I have a few questions for those who have already gone down this road.

Can I just remove the three mount bolts securing each of my existing fans and mount this single fan and shroud in their place? Can I use radiator tie wraps to secure the shroud or is there a better way to secure it behind the radiator? Will it fit without modifying the shroud?

Being in Arizona in the summer, I have modified my existing fans by grounding the relay so that they are always on with the ignition switch (I only drive this car in stop and go traffic anyway). Will the single Taurus fan blow the existing fuse if I wire it to be on high any time the ignition switch is on? Can I just tap into the wiring on one of the existing fans to drive the Taurus fan or will it be too much current demand?

I have had really bad luck with junk yard parts. Is this aftermarket fan a suitable alternative for the original Taurus fan? Thanks!

If you don't kind me asking, how'd you wire your old fans to the ignition

 

It's been a while since I did it but there are two identical fan relays at the firewall on the driver's side (there are actually three relays, but I think one is for the fuel pump). I just grounded a wire from each of the relays (I can't remember which one) to a strut tower bolt using an additional nut and washer on the threads. I'm sure you can do a search for which wire to ground because I got the information off this forum.

 

I just mounted a taurus fan to my 92 z vert. I mounted mine toward the passenger side with the harness extension pointed toward the ground. I ground on it and used gasket sealer to seal it to my be cool radiator. I also had to grind the top mounting plate that holds the rad in to clear the taurus fan. It is a far better system than the factory dual fans and you will never look back. I live in Arkansas and it gets Africa hot here and without a front air deflector the car will not quite get to 220 on the highway with this fan. They make a factory breaker (40amp) for this fan that I just got it a few days ago that is a smart thing to have. It plugs into the factory harness and automatically resets itself.

Well, I installed the Taurus fan using the existing fan wiring. As expected, I had to trim the upper plastic radiator cover that goes over the radiator because the fan was too tall for it. The bottom of the shroud seemed to fit securely into the frame just behind the radiator so all I ended up doing was drilling a few small holes in the shroud and running safety wire to secure it to the existing upper plastic radiator cover.

I wired the fan to be on high with the ignition on. I'm not sure how it will work in 110 degree temps but it seems to be working at night when the temp is down to 85. I'll report back. I think the fuse for the factory fan is a 30 Amp. Should I go with a 40 Amp for the new Taurus fan?

 

What year Taurus fan? Any pics on the mods needed to be made?

It was a Dorman fan (made in Taiwan, which used to be bad but today it's better than mainland China).

No pics, but I will see if I can get some good pics and post them here. It took about 45 minutes to install. I installed it with the connector at the bottom.

 

if your using the low i think you'll be ok, high you will melt wires, i'm waiting for my fan to come in, think i'm gonna get a controller for it.

 

I am using the wires from both fan harnesses in parallel, so I'm hoping that both 12V leads will share the load. I drove it in 100 degree traffic today and the temp maxed out at 240 degrees with the a/c on high. Before it would have been as high as 255, so as it is right now, I think the Taurus fan is good for about 15 degrees. I would hate to speak too soon though.

Does anyone know where the fuse is for the cooling fan on a 92 Z-28. I checked the 30 amp fuse in the fuse box under the kick panel but that is for the cockpit heater/a/c blower fan--not the radiator cooling fan.

 

I have a 92 RS. The fan fuse is over by the battery. I believe the Z-28 is the same. I could be wrong but I'm sure someone will correct it if I am. It's at least a place to look for now. Just follow the wire coming off the fan, over towards the battery. You should see a wire come out of the heat shield and the fuse should be somewhere around there. I believe the stock fuse is a 20 amp. Try there. Hope it helps you out.

 

This is simple. The ECM turns the fans on and off by switching the ground to the relay. Power into the relay is hot whenever the ignition is on. If you take the ground wire for the fan relay and ground it to the body, the fans will come on whenever the ignition is hot to switch on the relay. The fans will stay on for as long as the ignition is not in the full off position.

 

I traced the fan wires back towards the battery and all I could find was a spade type connector and some fusible links. I'm not sure I see a fuse. Could the fuse be the wires themselves?

 

Here are some pictures. It's not the cleanest setup, but it didn't take much work to get it in there. I only had to secure it at the top. As you can see, I had to take a dremmel tool and cut part of the plastic cover on top of the radiator, all the way down to where the hose support sticks out.

 

Nice work! I grounded my relay to a switch, I love it...turns on whenever i want, turn the switch off and works like stock...only when the key is on so I don't forget to drain the battery. Gonna hit the junkyard and try to grab a taurus fan!

 

On my taurus fan setups I cut that connector out and put a relay in. On my 87 Camaro I didnt put a relay in and it melts the wires up by the factory relay. I didnt put a relay because all my other Camros with the Taurus fan are all toggle switch controlled. I didnt want to add a switch to my 87 so I been messing around with setups. Think Im going to try to put a relay in and see what happens. Soooo.....ya might want to put the relay in but on all my Camaros and my GTAs Ive eliminated all of those connectors because they were all going bad. Some I just cut out and wired together...others I put a inline fuse in.

 

I'm wondering why you did the fan mod?? you had dual fans right??

It benefitted my vert a ton. Hey emery, the fan will work a little better if you seal it against the core more. Like it is it will pull air from around the side of the shroud instead of through the radiator. The factory dual fans lose air because they are so far away from the core and have no shroud. Drove my car in town today here in Arkansas and it was 101. In town it ran from 180 to half way between 180 and straight up and back down to 180. When the fan comes on in town between red lights it cools the car down well. I think the controller I am using only applies partial juice for a while then it gives it full power.
