L03 fan switch

Has anyone else had a ACDelco fan switch go belly up after only a month? I verified that the fan works; it comes on when the AC is on and I grounded the green wire and it kicked the fan on. These are a PITA to change and since I need to swap it out, does anyone have any tips to make it less of a hassle to change? I'm going to try a NAPA switch this time. Every once and a while I just have bad luck with ACDelco.

Re: L03 fan switch

never had that happen, but I know that switch is gonna be a pain, I gotta do mine soon, and I've got headers, so it's only making it worse for me. I wanna get it right the first time so I'll avoid a delco. thanks for the heads up. IIRC, Delphi is also a delco brand but I'm not sure about it. Had 2 delphi fuel pumps fail on me in about 2 months. so I'm not impressed with them either.

Re: L03 fan switch

AC Delco have always been the longest lasting of the ones I've tried, but they all suffer and fail frequently due to their flaky design. I gave up and got a Derale fan controller from Summit Racing that uses a radiator probe and is adjustable. Easy to install but they also make them with a sensor rather than a switch that you install in the stock fan switch location and can be adjusted for turn on temps. much more dependable. There are more deluxe models for dual fans, etc. Worth checking out

Re: L03 fan switch

i got the fan switch from napa for a 86 / 87 grand national. turns on at 205* lasted me 2 yrs. just putting that out there. all the firebird ones ive tried lasted a month or less. prolly from the high turn on temps

Re: L03 fan switch

LOL, fan switch failed again. New one doesn't seem to work, either.

Re: L03 fan switch

Keep in mind, all (regular) f-body fan switch turn on temps are 238F°. While it may not seem to work, it might be fine given switching temp tolerance and gauge reading tolerance.
There are many others to use as alternate. I used a sw-505 (a-zone, 215F° on) on my old 91 for years with no issues.

Re: L03 fan switch

It's not a matter of it turning on too high; it didn't work at all. I gave it until 250 degrees to turn on, and it did not.

Re: L03 fan switch

10% tolerance to switch, 10% or greater for gauge sender age depending, 10%+ added resistance in 22 year old wiring. The more resistance in the gauge circuit makes it read higher than actual. I'm not discounting a bad switch but, three's a lot of variables.
