Engine Oil Cooler - Factory Tube and Fin?

I've never heard of this factory type of cooler mentioned here (see attached).

Did GM ever install a cooler like this on 3rd Gens?

The only coolers I've ever seen are the ones plumbed with engine coolant.

Interesting. It does clearly indicate LG4, but not a vehicle line. Was LG4 used elsewhere (other than F-bodies), like Caprice, or pickups?

the PDF file clearly states the " F " car line. that's us right there. but I have only seen the oil to water design. no hope of ever finding one of these though. but dayum! I sure would like one of those for my 86 IROC!!

I found this when I was thumbing through a 1986 F-Body Assembly Manual.

It was probably drawn up but never put into production.

I have never understood why the engineers thought "cooling" the oil with hot anti freeze was gonna work. but ,hey what do I know.

Re: Engine Oil Cooler - Factory Tube and Fin?

Because it says "Awaiting Layout Approval" I'm guessing it wasn't approved for F Body. I ran that part number through the GM Part Catalog and it shows as a cooler used in 73-84 Blazers, pickups, and Suburbans. The part number changed to 12364237, but the illustrations I see online for that # don't look anything like what we see in the pdf you showed us. I'm no Parts guy so my trail goes cold there.

Edited
OK, so I did some more digging, I ran the Part Number for the bracket and it came up for a 83-85 F Body Export vehicles and shows the second cooler part number is discontinued, so maybe some of the F-Bodies got this after all.

Works fine in my Express!! My oil temps dropped nearly 50*F with the factory style in-radiator cooler. They were pushing nearly 300*F on long hill climbs towing 6,500 lbs.

Re: Engine Oil Cooler - Factory Tube and Fin?

Another needed item for our cars that GM didn't see the need to spend the little bit extra money on for mass production. I wonder if maybe it had to do with some oil conservation propaganda since oil would be running though the cooler and you would have to add more?
