If You Converted to a Serpentine System

A few years ago I added a GM kit (12497698) to my 350 HO Deluxe. The review can be found below:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/afte...rsion-kit.html

Though the kit seemly provided everything I needed, to include a brace on the pass side of the compressor, I was aways troubled by an annoying sound/vibration when the compressor kicked on. Long story short. At a recent bone yard trip, I found a 90-92 Camaro with a surprise (at least for me), a second compressor brace, which runs from the driver's side of the compressor to just below the thermostat housing. Today, after the install I was rewarded with a silent compressor. The donor car provided all that was required. I simply swapped one bolt for another. I picked up a "belt guard" too. Pics below.

Here's the GM kit bolt alongside the donor bolt. Also pictured is the belt guard. Anyone have GM's name for it?

Re: If You Converted to a Serpentine System

Yeah I have all those parts on my converted 86 because I stole the stock serp. system from a 90-92. Got the whole mess for $150 including all accessories. The GM kit apparently wasn't as complete as pulling the whole system out of a factory equipped car.

I did have to drill and tap a hole into the passenger head/water jacket for one of the serp. system bracket. But that was no big deal. Little loctite 545 on the threads.

I think that is actually a hose support, the stock TPI hose would almost rest against that area when installed. If you really want the name I can look in the parts book

I saw a TPI car recently but I don't recall the piece supporting a hose. If you have a moment to look the part up, I'd appreciate your effort.

EDIT: BTW, IIRC, the TPI car's hose support was incorporated into the upper radiator mount.

Yeah, on a TPI car the hose can get close to that belt guard or whatever you want to call it. Depends a bit on how the hose was installed on the Tstat neck too.

The serp setup on my 88 had that metal piece just like you have installed in your picture.

Forgot I had the parts manual CD on this PC
Parts book says
1.166 Guard , INL HOSE (1988) 10055001
1.166 Guard ,RAD INL HOSE (1989-91) 10100144
Same for 92, 82-86 was similar to the first line

Re: If You Converted to a Serpentine System

It's a hose support. My hose lays right on it. 86 TPI. Keeps the hose from touching the belt.

Re: If You Converted to a Serpentine System

From reading the GMPP PDF for the serpentine setup, it sounds like they wanted the kit to work with as many cars as possible. I'd expect they left certain pieces out that likely wouldn't have a corresponding mounting point on some cars. In other words, they probably didn't figure most of their customers would be using an intake that would work with the brace so it was deemed redundant. Just a guess.

Re: If You Converted to a Serpentine System

related to this swap, if going from the 2-3 V-belts and one serp on 87 LG4 to this does W/P need to be changed also? IIRC it'll run opposite direction?
while back looking on Rock Auto they had different parts numbers

Re: If You Converted to a Serpentine System

Serpentine setups use a reverse rotation water pump, yes. You would need to change the pump too

Well, apparently the guard is unnecessary on my set-up, but I'll leave it in place for the moment.

Thanks for the info,

JamesC
