82 Trans Am air dam deflector replacement alternative

So i recently purchased an 82 trans am, but the front air dam deflector is totally gone (the one that's below the bumper area). Researching i found that the correct gm part number for this specific car year is 10017673. However, this part is long discontinued now. I saw conflicting reports that possibly part number 12395557 would fit, as it is the newer 3 piece version, and is not discontinued. So i went to my local dealer, and in his computer, he shows that 10017673 is the only correct part number for an 82, with no alternate part number. I had him look up 12395557 as well, but he confirmed this is not for an 82. I also checked AllData, but didn't seem to find any info there either.
So my question is, is there any alternative or aftermarket version for 10017673 that exists nowadays, or can be modified to fit properly? Or maybe even some DIY advice with material from home depot, lowes, etc? Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks!

If your not concerned about 'factory correct' and just need an air dam, you can just bolt a camaro one on...

https://www.ebay.com/p/85-92-Camaro-...3929/657554727

If the car still has the mechanical fan, the air dam isn't really needed

I found mine in from Ricks Camaro. Also I think Classic Industries has them. Alternatively a junk yard probably has one or two that are still serviceable.

Last time I hit the local Pick Your Part there was a very clean looking Firebird maybe 83 or 84. Didn't look at it too much but it may have one if that part spans several years.
Can maybe look if I go again soon if that would help any

you need to do some modification to make the newer style work. That's why it doesn;t match at the dealer since the dealer only has the CORRECT part for a certain year span.

Appreciate the offer, and of course i'd be willing to reinburse you for your time, shipping, and the part cost. No rush, so only if you happen to be going there for another reason. If you do go, please verify if it's a trans am model, or regular firebird. The trans am has a different part number than the regular firebirds, and wont fit. I am looking for the trans am version. For reference, check this old thread, and scroll down to see the pics of the air dam that person found. That's the part i'm looking for:

classic industries doesnt have it listed in their catalog for that year, and on their site they only have something similar, but labeled as "ground effect front spoiler" (Product # PT1500 or Product # F15200), so i dont think that's it. i did see an old thread mentioning an old part number that classic industries USED to have for that part (part# G4749), so maybe i'll give them a call and see if they can check that old part number in their system.

Re: 82 Trans Am air dam deflector replacement alternative

Here is another part number for the 1-piece air dam. 10017672. This is stamped on the NOS one I just bought awhile back. Also, FYI, this same air dam setup can be found on base Firebirds and Formulas all the way to at least 1990. Both my 89 Firebird and 90 Formula have the same center mount and one-piece 2 5/8" tall wrap around air dam as my 82 Trans Am. The center mount design may vary, but it will work.

Here is a pic of a center mount that mounts to the bottom of the radiator support:

This is the air dam that mounts to the center piece and to your side ground effects that go under the bumper and attach to the bottom and side of the fenders:

Re: 82 Trans Am air dam deflector replacement alternative

Thanks everybody for the feedback on this. I think I'll go to the dealer and risk getting the non-discontinued part # 12395557 (newer 3 piece version supposedly only for 83-90) just to try it. hawks motorsports and some GM parts sites claim it indeed does fit the 82 trans am, so we'll see. I'll report back whether it's successful or not or if any modding was necessary (hopefully with pics). If it doesn't fit at all, i'll just resell it on ebay and get most of my money back that way. Hopefully this future info will help others out too in the same situation!

I also called classic industries, they dont have it either. Gave them an old part number from an old catalog from back when they did have it, but they no longer carry it.

Which one? The GFX version has the side pieces of the 3pc airdam bolted to a lip on the front fender gfx. The non-gfx cars (formulas) have a filler panel that extends down with a lip that the side pieces bolt to. Only the center is the same between GFX or no GFX.

I still need to find an NOS Left filler, and either NOS or Very Good center...

Yep. We don't serve their kind (gfx Firebirds) round here!

Actually, I got those side pieces on accident. My Pontiac parts guy ordered in the Formula style when I needed the gfx style for my gray Firebird. I went ahead and bought them as spares for my Formula.

Re: 82 Trans Am air dam deflector replacement alternative

All the 91-92 bird parts are discontinued. I have had the side pieces laying around since the mid 2000's, and the filler panel was something I happened across on Ebay. Every so often a piece will pop up here or there, but I'm sure I'm not the only one looking. I think I've got just enough OK used pieces to finish the Green car, and the NOS parts are my backup.

Re: 82 Trans Am air dam deflector replacement alternative

Just wanted to update, someone actually listed one on ebay, the original 1 piece style, for $75 so I bought that. It's off an 83, so it should fit. Theres still one left as of the time of this post, if anyone needs one also.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but do you reckon they still have this?

Thanks
