on my 86 firebird there is a cooling fan switch, I believe between #6 and #8 plugs It has a blue wire coming out of the switch. But the wire is busted off from some where. I cant seem to find anywhere. I have replaced the fan relay. which is behind passenger headlight. I'm just baffled.
Maybe this wire is totally something different. but my problem is the fan does not turn on at 220 or at all. I had the fan motor tested it works, the relay is new.......no clue with this blue wire goes to.

 

If it’s a blue wire that’s probably the knock sensor and wires are switched between ks and temp switch.

 

I found the fan switch FINALLY. Got the connector off, how in the world do I get the switch out? I have tried every socket i have, can't seem to get any to work.

 

I never had any trouble removing mine. I don't remember the size, but it's probably metric...

 

This is one is giving me a run for my money. The most difficult place to work at. And I cant seem to find the right socket.

 

Why are you trying to remove it? I thought you were trying to find the wire to connect it. You probably know this, but if you remove the fan switch, then coolant will come pouring out, so I hope you have something underneath the car to keep if from flowing all over the floor.

By the way, I posted a new picture in your other thread. It should clear-up the wire colors, which I had already done in my previous post in that thread early this morning. They're black and white. That's their colors, as I had said--fan switch wire is black, knock sensor wire is white; not saying the issue is "black and white," although I guess it kind of is lol. You'll see the two wires in their original location, where they should be if your harnesses were still intact. But they still should be in that vicinity somewhere.

 

I also am having trouble getting a socket on the switch. I think it is because of the heat shield above it. It won't let me get a hold on it with a socket. I need to get the car up in the air and maybe tap the heat shield a bit so that a socket will fit on the switch.

 

It was my oil dipstick in the way of using a socket for me. Open end 13/16 wrench works fine though. Get it loose and finish by hand after getting out of the way a bit before the water falls on you. Piece of cake

 

Go from the bottom.. .super easy even if you got all the emission tubes in place

 

My dipstick tube was also in the way of my fan switch. I opted to just remove everything in my way. Took the ac accumulator out to pull the dipstick tube out, took out the starter to clean around the dipstick tube hole and see where to guide it back in. Then I had easy access, I do think I slightly pried on the heatshield to fit a socket on. The coolant shower is fun and exciting.

 

I replaced mine, but also added a derale fan controller.

you can test the relay by grounding the green wire. if you ground the fan switch wire and the fan does not come on, you may need a relay.
