Better alternative to the AC Delco water pump?

Bought an AC Delco Gold water pump to replace my failing original and the housing cracked when installing the new heater hose adapter. Maybe I was just overtightening but it sure didn't seem like it. I'm guessing this housing is grey iron and not cast iron. Anything better available?

My OEM replacement Oreilly pump does really well with my 383.

I was impressed with the quality of the Carquest Premium heavy duty water pump I installed on my 1992 GMC truck. I got it at Advance Auto Parts.

I got the one above it. The cast iron pump is $128. Geez. I may just go grab an Autozone or Oreilly cast iron pump.

Jeff, I bet that cracked Delco Gold water pump is china made, right? I've noticed that the "Gold" line of AC Delco seems to be chinesium and I try to avoid it. That being said, even some of the genuine GM parts that I've recently purchased say, "made in china" on the box .

I'm sure it is. The more expensive cast iron one might not be. I ordered a cast iron pump from Advanced Auto that's supposed to be here today.

Good luck with the new part. It's probably made in Mexico which, in my opinion, is way better than china made products.

Re: Better alternative to the AC Delco water pump?

New pump from Advanced is on and working great. I finished it around 9pm last night. I think it took me longer to figure out where all the bolts went(lol, getting old sucks). I wanted to drive it in to work today but I didn't have enough coolant on hand so I'll get it out over the weekend.

Thank you for this information. A properly rebuilt OEM water pump is probably high quality and will last a long time.

I get it. I'd use an aluminum pump. I'm assuming the Edelbrock water pump has been working good for you, right?

I didn't really see a need for aluminum on a bone stock LG4. Especially since they're way more expensive than what I bought.

Can you buy a rebuild kit for our water pumps? I have a nice 12-ton press I’m itching to use.

Yeah, I’d rather rebuild my original one than buy another one with Chinesium parts in it. There’s a seller on eBay that sells water pump rebuild kits, but the cross reference only goes up to the mid ‘70’s small block Chevy.

Are our water pumps the same as the ones from that era? Except for the earlier short nose/long nose differences, they should be all the same in respect to the rebuild parts, right?

Same here in Texas. Although they are typically a GMB housing, I have had great results with Flowkooler pumps myself. I also use a high flow thermostat. Typically a 170F.

Re: Better alternative to the AC Delco water pump?

Sadly, delco is just a name with chyna parts anymore.

I've had an edelbrock aluminum pump on one of my cars since the mid 90s. I sent it back to them for a rebuild a couple yrs ago. Had a small drip after a long winter so I thought i better get ahead of it.
have several new e-pumps just waiting for other projects.

I also have a semi rare gmpp aluminum pump for serpentine systems on another car.
I feel the aluminum helps disapate heat a bit better so that's what I use

No one here has rebuilt their own water pump?
