What do I need for programming

Hello, I am new to all this and am curious as to what I would need to hook my ECM up to a computer and change the values through software. I hope this is what this board is for and am asking in the right spot. Can someone just tell me what hardware I need and where some available software is? Thanks.

My guess is that you have a TPI...

Check out

or for a great free program

with this program you must replace the PROM everytime you change something.

The reason im asking is my cooling fan is kicking in at 3/4 of the gauge (I find that very high) and my idle is stuck at 1500 rpms. I have replaced the IAC and TPS and cannot get it to go down and am wondering if the ECM is set to 1500 rpms. If you guys could make a suggestion or confirm that the ecm probably has it set at 1500 rpms that would be great. I don't know too much of the history on the car, I just bought it used about 3 weeks ago. Thanks.

BTW, I already had the car checked for any Vacuum leaks and this is not the problem.

People associate TPI with the 305 or 350 V8s from 85-92 in F-bodies (and 85-91 Y-bodies). V6s are referred to MPFI, not TPI.

You may find you get the "wrong answer" if you call your V6 "TPI".

No prob. TunerCat does have a TDF for you too - so eprom burning is available. However, the TDF you need is different between 3.1 and 2.8.

Scope out DIY Prom Burning, since you are reallly looking at getting into eprom burning. While we don't have many V6 guys, there are a lot of "tuning basics" that's the same regardless of the engine or ECM.

See you there.
