Car: 1987 Camaro Z28
Engine: 5.7 HO TPI
Transmission: 700r4
decifering between a 350 and a 305 chip
I have a 87 Z28 with a 350 TPI motor. The stock motor was a 305 TPI. How can I tell if the chip swap has been done? Is it a big deal to have the 350 chip? will my engine blow or something?

With the info you have supplied I guess I have 2.73 rear end. I couldnt find a stock chip on that list that took that ratio into account. Would you suggest I get one programmed to match my vehicle? Or could I safely use one on that list?
I am sure its obvious that I am a newbie to Camaro's and such. I hope this next question is a valid one; Can I get the chip I have now reprogrammed instead of buying a new one?

One thing to consider is how the engine runs now. if it runs decent and there aren't any issues, it may be best to just stay with what is in there. If you are planning on modifing the engine then getting into doing the chips yourslef is a good thing.
The other thing, which may be more important then a chip, is to check that the proper injectors are installed. The 350 engine used a larger injector then the 305's.
Here are the numbers that may be found on the injectors body itself for the 5.7L engines (350's):
5235211, 5235302, 17086544 and 17086545.
It is also possible that aftermarket injectors such as Accel or SVO's have been installed. The '87 & '88 305 TPI used this injector: 5235301. If that one is found then getting the proper injectors would be advisable.

Most likely this info came from TGO and for additional info may be found with a search.
Have you been able to verify that the current engine is a 350? Can check the driver side rear of engine on top portion of the bellhousing mounting flange. Will have either a large cast in 5.0L or 5.7L.

Yes the stamping says 5.7. I have a new engine (also a 5.7) going at this very moment. It is also a 5.7. I bought this car used a few days ago and then I blew a rod. And now I think I know why. Alot of mismatched parts!!!

As for the counterweight, it is possible, IIRC the one-piece rear main seal 350's ran a small counter weight. Although you may want to do a search or post on the general tech board on this.
Shame about blowing the engine. Off hand I would say that proper injectors and a new MEMCAL just may be in order.
If the engine going in is modified (heads, cam, etc), you may what to consider getting into programming your own chips. You can then go with newer code too. The '89 f-bodys ran the $6E code which is better then the early $32B code (maskid).

I am the type of guy that takes risks (sometimes to my own peril though ) so Ill try it, but Id like a little reassurance that I can do this before buying the equipment.
