What setup is best for me?

Well, I no longer have a Third Gen anymore but this is the only place I know of that has a broad range of EFI knowledge. After I return from Iraq I will be putting a SBC into my '92 S-10, this is going to be my daily driver, which is why I am now leaning towards EFI.

I am open to any and all suggestions, because I am clueless as to what setup is best for me. I have 8 months left to plan out the build and gain some EFI knowledge.

Only real specfics are that I can learn tune it myself and it is reliable.

P.S. Wasn't sure if this should go here or "Alternative Port EFI Intakes"

Re: What setup is best for me?

the factory GM ECMs can be tuned, there is a steep learning curve but the factory systems have a lot to offer. to me one of the biggest things is the fact you can get most any ECM from a wrecking yard when ever you need to.

you can go with TBI or TPI.
there are a few choices of ECMs you can use.
the 7730 which was used in the 90~92 TPI thirdgens which is a speed density system.
a few different ECMs if you want to go with TBI, one or 2 of which can also run a TPI motor.
there are some that can control an electronic shift transmission.
the 7749 which was used in the Syclone if you want to turbo charge it.
or even one of the newer OBD2 computers.

you may want to contact S10Wildside for info on a wiring harness, & he can probably offer some ideals on which way to go.

for tuning a factory GM ECM, you can start here.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...uide-book.html

there is a ton of reading, so you may want to wait until you decide if you want to go with a factory ECM & which one you want to use.

stay safe & thank you

So is a factory ECM would be much easier than a standalone unit?

Re: What setup is best for me?

i have never messed with any of the after market systems, so i know nothing about them, i can't tell you if one is easier than the other, hopefully someone who has done both will jump in. my understanding is the after market systems don't do as much as the factory systems can.
i do burn my own chips for the 92 camaro TPI system i have in my car.
it took me some time to learn how to do it. there is still a lot i don't know, sometimes i enjoy it, other times it drives me nuts.

something i for got to mention, there is also the EBL for TBI systems.
it seems everyone who has it loves, i have heard nothing bad about it.

Re: What setup is best for me?

In my opinion....

Either go with an OBD -II computer and an electronic trans or an aftermarket. The aftermarket computers do everything the stock do and more. However, I am not aware of any that will run an electronic transmission (although the megasquirt will as soon as the gpio board is released. They are writing code for the 460le as a start)

I have never programmed a stock GM OBD-II computer. However, I have done a complete wiring harness for my computer, and tuned it. I can tell you that it is not as bad as you may think. The megasquirt and the SBC go together very well. In fact, the megasquirt comes preloaded with a fuel map for a TPI 350. It is also set up to run all gm sensors by default. I am using the stock distributor and 8 pin module for timing control.

Re: What setup is best for me?

Well I have been doing alot of research. I'm leaning towards 730 or 749 ECU, Moate's Ostrich and prolly tune with TunerPro RT.

Prolly have S10Wildside build me a custom harness to make things simpler.

This will be powering a Miniram'd 383.

Re: What setup is best for me?

Are there anythings I should take into consideration if go with a single-plane EFI manifold instead of a Miniram, as far as tuning is conserned?
