VATS question
on my 89 trans am the security light comes on , then goes
out but then will not crank over with the key(i have a 30 amp
starter button installed to crank it over)i am under the impression
that i should hear a solenoid click inside the car to engage the
starting circuit. but nwhen i crank the engine over with the button
and the key turned on i do have an injector pulse.

Re: VATS question
your vats module and your key are different. if they do not match up then you have a 4 minute wait between tries. if they are the same then your reader for the key is probably bad or maybe your vats module is bad. you just need to get them both at the same time. when you order a new vats they usually send you a new key with it.
pulling the vats module will not help - your ecm is asking if they match and if it does not get a match signal it will not start. no signal is the same as a no match signal.

Re: VATS question
It then comes down to a fault in the starter solenoid wiring circuit.
Could be VATS module not giving enable signal to the starter enable relay
The starter enable relay itself
or the inhibitor switch at the base of the shifter .
The enable relay can be bypassed ( thick yellow to thick green) leaving only the inhibitor switch in the circuit which can also be bypassed leaving nothing in the circuit between key and starter.

Re: VATS question

If you have injector pulse then the VATS module is working correctly as far as seeing the correct key resistance.[VATS controls starter and injector pulse]
It then comes down to a fault in the starter solenoid wiring circuit.

Re: VATS question
if i try to start the car with the key,but not on the battery charger,it
don't start, but it wil start with the starter button that was already in the car. now if i put it on the battery charger it will start just fine with the key, vats module and all.
I load tested the battery and it seems to be fine.
The battery is a 550 cold cranking amp,and the battery came out of a cavalier.
So my question is, is the problem that i am having because that the battery is too small to power up the computer,or something?
