Tpi for boats

Has anyone worked out a way to bypass the oygen sensor on Either LB9 or L98 engines for use in ski boats?

Most boats I know of have raised exhaust that takes a downpipe so that water doesn't backflush on the engine.

At least thats the way it is on my dads 1960 Ski Natique. But thats just a carbed graymarine engine.

Re: Tpi for boats

An L98 would make a great ski boat engine with the mid-range power. A 383 with a First intake would be more fun. Would make insane torque to run a high pitch prop.

I still think a powerglide would be a great trans for a boat. extra RPM at the prop for great onplane speed.

The system is going on an old SB 400 to replace the worn 350 in the boat. There is really no place to install the O2 sensor.

Just increase the closed loop and BLM learn enable temperature (CTS) thresholds.

By your suggestion it would be forcing the ECM to remain in open loop and use the associated tables for open loop.

Correct, the only difference is the commanded AFR and the non-adjustment of fuel trims due to being in open loop.

Re: Tpi for boats

I've only seen one boat with an O2 sensor and it was mounted in one cylinder exhaust. Never ran well. All inboard engines I have seen have no where to put an O2 do to enclsed cooling exhaust. All other boats run open loop. O2 sensor is an emmisions device for cars. Not needed for EFI.

New inboards run a cat con. I suspect they are open loop. Not sure how they protect the cat? Power is very linear. I suggest a simple task to tune.

Re: Tpi for boats

Technoligies does wonders! That's a lot more heat to take care of on an inboard? But keeping the cat cool wouldn't work? Wonder how they set them up?

I tuned a few boat conversions around here since we have about a bizillion boats and lakes. Not much off idle cruise I'll tell you that. It's all load and propeller size!

Re: Tpi for boats

Isn't that just a narrow band O2 anyway? Wouldn't be very useful in a boat I would think, should be running richer than 14.0:1 most often.
