89 tpi 350 runs poorly... what else is new?
Hi,
Could please someone point me towards some good read about the values ecm sees. What values are normal, need to interpret all that.
I have checked spark, put new injectors and verified they get signal from the harness with a noid light.
Next is to verify I have good compression.
Car has lumpy idle and shakes as if it does not have enough rpm\s. with more gas it smoothes out (or the lumpiness is masked)
I have an actron cp9150 which can read live data, maybe a dozen parameters only. To read my 89 has to be tricked into thinking it's an 86 5.0 sfi.
Now would an interface cable show more parameters?
I need to know what ***normal*** values are, maybe maf and o2 sensor are not good anymore.
I also need a good read of how all these things are coming together.
Intention is to restore stock running condition.
Needy guy I know
Thanks so much!

Check out http://www.aldlcable.com/aldl.asp and http://www.tunerpro.net/screenshots.htm for examples of what you can get for very little dollars. Was the fuel pump replaced in this bird?

dunno about the pump.
I'll check fuel pressure standing and operating. maybe dirty filter? will replace this too.
scanner shows lean with the new injectors... I know old ones were dripping.
thanks for the link!
so these cables would show up more parameters then?

1989 TPI's could be scanned in 160 baud mode and 8192 baud mode. It sounds like your scanner is only scanning in 160 baud mode, which only gave 10-15 analog values. If I recall correctly, the software needs to make it switch over to 8192 baud. Check and see if TunerPro has an ADS or ADX file for 8192 baud mode, I'm not sure if it does. I'm pretty sure that TTS DataMaster supported 8192 baud for the 1989 TPI. For cables, check out the ALDL Bluetooth cables too (1320 Electronics and Red Devil River make them). If you have an Android phone or tablet, you can use that to get your engine data! they work with your computer too if you have bluetooth.

I would check fuel pressure. Could be fuel pump.
how old is the cap, rotor, wires, plugs? Inspect cap rotor and look for wire arcing. How do plugs look?
No CE light I presume?

Thanks everyone for answers.
Checked fuel pressure. Vacuum line disconnected from regulator (and plugged, as well as plenum nipple) at idle in park it reads about 43,5psi. ignition on is 42psi. If I leave the vacuum line plugged I get again 42 key on, and it drops to about 37 at idle.
I have checked the spark with a remote spark tester by disconnecting at the plug. Seem to have spark everywhere. spark plugs are maybe 20k miles old...
I have a set of wires, cap and rotor on hand. will replace spark plugs and check compression.
will build a smoke machine to check leaks.
anyone has some information with what these values should be for the parameters I can read?
Maybe ecm is on its way. yesterday checked for power at the injector harness with the other bank disconnected (fuse removed). it wanted to start more on 3 cylinders on one bank than the other.... maybe I'm getting paranoid...
I'll try to swap the ecm with another one
thanks again!!

hi,
measured with voltmeter the tps. it was .43v and it would only go to 3.63v (heard should read more than 4v). adjusted to read .54v (this gave 3.78v WOT).
scanned the car having the scanner set to 1986 5.0 fuel injection (would not scan for 89 tpi):
parameter: engine off / open loop idle/ closed loop idle
codes present n/a
3rd gear sw on
ac request off
blm 128
blm enabled no
coolant (degF) 76 / 82 / 114
EGR diag sw clsd
EGR duty (%) 0
engine rpm 0 / 1025 / 925 to 1025 (switched in reverse, brakes on, rpm was still 1075ish)
ESC counter 0 / 6
ehhaust o2 lean / lean / rich/lean
fan request on
iac position 160 / 66 / 57-65
inj pw (ms) 0 / 138 / 114-123
integrator 128 / / 123
loop status open / open / closed
maf (gr/sec) 1280 / 2928 / 2877-3000 (3600 for 1500rpm)
mat (degF) 93 / 94 / 96
o2s (mv) 453 / 164 / 195
o2s crosscounts 0 / 184 / 170...228...251...8...
override EN yes
p/n switch p/n
prom ID 9326
TCC lockup no
tcc solenoid no (do these trannies have torque converter clutches?)
TPS sensor (v) 0.69 ... that is weird because set to .54 with voltmeter...
veh speed (mph) 0
thanks everyone!

Re: 89 tpi 350 runs poorly... what else is new?
scanned a buddy's 87 5,0 tpi...
notable differences:
BLM 128 key on engine off/ 141-143 idle
BLM enabled NO / YES (need to re-scan mine)
MAF (gr/sec) 3840 /2610 !!!!
TPS sensor (v) 0.53 at WOT also measured 4,3v. (I need to re-scan mine at WOT)
his prom id is 8071
thanks everyone!

Not sure you can scan for a different year and get good info. Check firing order/plug wires on correct. Check timing, disconnect timing set wire. I'd also check for the EGR valve being stuck open a bit, chunk of carbon holding the pintle open.

Re: 89 tpi 350 runs poorly... what else is new?
thanks everyone for the updates.
car cleaned up, may have been old gas.
hit the strip and got an even 15s@92mph on a very hot day.
stayed too long at wot for my liking, if it would have shifted better maybe this time would have improved..
anyways can't complain
new injector seem to have drastically improved mileage too... old one mut have dripped so badly. got more than 21mpg ave (80%hwy, gently driven)!!
