Just wondering?
Was VATS defeated, if not, how did they know which code you had? Were the spark and fuel tables much different than stock?
I know the Stage 2 chips turned on your fans sooner and required a 160* t stat.
I did actually call Hypertech about it and the guy's responses made no sense to me.

hz?
Anyway, let me run this by you, I've got an '89 IROC, where the previous owner installed 24# injectors and had a Miami area shop retune his PROM. I replaced the 24 pounders with stock 19# injectors and figured I could use the factory PROM from my other '89, (I replaced it with a Hypertech back in the day, I'm the original owner), but it wouldn't start. I blamed that on VATS. Any ideas? Just curious at this point.

15 keys, one VATS module. The module memorizes the key value on the very first start, and it looks for that key value from then on. If the key value is right, it generates a signal for the ECM. If the value is wrong, it doesn't send a signal to the ECM.
The chip can be programmed so the ECM doesn't look for the signal, hence vats delete.

The prom/ecm just looks at it as a yes or no question. The prom determines if the ECM looks for a VATS signal. The ECM looks for the signal, is it there? yes/no.
I've never heard of a commercial PROM having a VATS delete option. The signal from the VATS module is the same regardless of which key it's mated to. The ECM never knows which key value is being used, it just knows if the VATS module is saying it's the right key.
The chip just tells the computer to look for a VATS signal, or not to look for a VATS signal.

So the factory PROM from one '89 should not have been defeated by the VATS from my other '89?

Shouldn't have mattered. Should be able to swap the ECM and PROM between a dozen cars as long they're the same year and same options. As long as you keep the key and VATS module paired, it's going to generate the signal the ECM needs.

Negative Ghost Rider, that there is the starter enable relay. The VATS module turns the relay on/off based on the 'handshake' with the key.
You can bypass that relay and the starter will crank, but the engine won't fire unless the VATS module see's the right key and communicates with the ECM.

Additional info that may quell potential confusion.
This is the VATS module. Those two screws on the back of the HVAC ducting are where it's mounted on a 91 Firebird, and I would assume most thirdgens. If it's not clear, this is between the firewall and the duct, behind the dash, behind the main heater box, etc.
And the handy dandy VATS description and component chart

this one listed is for a 88 tpi 350 automatic
it is missing the piggyback adapter that connects to the memcal.

Thanks Bri- no deal at all if incomplete. On PN/year compatibility though I think that’s just Summit not being totally accurate:

That listing is odd, that’s a big difference some 88s had vats and all of 89.
the adapter that’s missing from the prom looks like this.

Re: Has anyone ever read one of the old Hypertech proms?
Someone on one of the 3rd gen FB pages claimed to read a Stage 2 Hypertech chip and this is what he said:
The differences over a stock PROM (Use AFUD 305, 5 speed, 3.45, G92) are these: Spark increased at WOT by 5 degrees from 1600-4800, WOT air fuel ratio increased by 4%, Open loop air fuel ratio increased by 2-3% in operating range, Fan on temp lowered to 160, MAF table one adjusted with slightly richer off idle, Less spark retard on hot engine, some EGR tweaks. So lots of little things but primarily more spark are WOT. If you compared a stock G92 chip and Hypertech with premium gas AND base timing set at 6 ... Hypertech should be faster. If you base timing is NOT at 6 ... then most likely it will ping and pull timing out ... thus going slower. My 2 cents.
