Having a tough time finding someone to tune my turbo tpi setup

So as the title states I’m having a really tough time finding someone willing to tune my turbo tpi setup. The car is an 88 305 5 speed car that I did a t56 swap and single turbo setup on. I had someone originally lined up to tune it but that had since fell through since I completed the build and now I am stuck with a car sitting in my garage waiting and I would really really like to hear it run. I had an unbranded 70mm t4 turbo setup, 60lb Siemens injectors, ported tpi setup and a secondary inline fuel pump. I purchased the ebl ecu to use tunerpro for tuning but I honestly can’t make heads or tails of it. I’m located in upstate, ny near Albany and can’t find anyone local with the knowledge or time to tune using tuner pro and the ones that can are severely backed up for months or don’t see it as worth there time. My plan was to get the setup running on 7lb wastegate pressure and then start building a small block ready for boost so I don’t mind if the 305 grenades in a month as long as I can get the tuning software working properly. I don’t really know what to do at this point. I am open to having someone tune it remotely but I don’t quite know who to contact seeing as I don’t have the original ecu anymore. If you guys have any suggestions or ideas I really appreciate it. Pms are welcome, comments are welcome, my email address is billhayner@rocketmail.com, and my phone number is 5182752009. Thank you in advance.

Re: Having a tough time finding someone to tune my turbo tpi setup

My only suggestion is to step away from the old TPI system and look to one of the new, self-learning, menu-driven EFI systems currently on the market. Guys with the actual knowledge---and inclination---to burn chips for 30+-year old EFIs are few and far between, at least in my neck of the woods.

Re: Having a tough time finding someone to tune my turbo tpi setup

Is motor pretty stock internally? Stock tpi heads and cam? Speed density map sensor ebl setup?

If you have ebl, see if RBob has a 305 tpi bin for you. Set the injector size to 60 and raise idle speed abit cuz it may be hard getting low enough pulsewidth with large injectors on that 305 and keeping it lean enough at idle

throw in atleast 1 step colder spark plugs gapped tight at .025-.028 imo to start. 4 heat range is stock i would try a 5 if only 5-7 psi boost for now. 6 if more

then there will be a boost referenced table adder. Here you will increase the multipliers to add in the proper fuel. Start witha few percent adder above normal na wot 100 kpa. 2 psi boost maybe give like 2-4% extra. 5 psi 5-10% extra. 7 psi maybe 15-20% for now. Key is watch your wideband o2 sensor and get one if you dont have one. Throttle in slow til it starts making boost. Get a reading and back off if lean or pig rich. The fuel table for boost is pretty easy to do from what i remember. You’ll likely want it in the high 11’s air fuel on pump gas if stock.

Else if you could get car down to me for some time i could set that up lol pittsburgh area

if its close to stock 305 tpi with bolt ons then a base 305 tpi bin should allow car to run when you change injector size etc

Re: Having a tough time finding someone to tune my turbo tpi setup

See I do have the ebl ecu but I can’t make heads or tails of it. Car was originally a maf car but I had to convert it to map when adding on the ebl setup. I do have an aem wideband wired into the ecu but I’m having an issue even finding bins and getting them to load into the ecu. The guy I previously had messing with it loaded a bin he called a base tune and it will start but it’s absolutely pig rich and I’ve only tried it twice in fear of fouling out the plugs. Both times I pulled the fuel pump fuse and continued to crank it over to try and burn off the excess fuel. I dropped in one step colder plugs and gapped them at .30 running 93 octane up here. Mechanically I can get anything done but I lose patience immediately when I can’t figure something out on my laptop. I’ve tried multiple times trying to search for bins that will help but I can’t even seem to figure out how to get a stock bin loaded let alone after I get it on there attempting to change anything.

Also 100% stock internally with unknown mileage just a heavily ported tpi manifold. And to the guy who commented to ditch the tpi lol I’m almost at the point where I’m just gonna go ls. I wanted to keep it tpi for the main reason that people used to do it back in the day so why can’t I. I’m honestly regretting that decision as of late because if I went to a single turbo 5.3 lsx I would have had people throwing themselves at me to tune it. I still really like the tpi setup but I didn’t think it was going to be like pulling teeth to get someone to tune it.

Those are some big injectors , load 3003.bin and edit the injector flow rate scaler like Orr suggests.

Theres a few ebl tuning threads here that can get you started in the diy prom tuning section

Thanks guys. I’ll have time to get into it again by the end of this week and I’ll give it a shot. Sorry if this thread is in the wrong section but I’ll post some more questions as needed. I just wanna get that darn iroc spooling.

I think the intent was to just go with a better management system, like a 24x, or a Holley system. Either of those can be used on a SBC, the 24x will require more parts, but the Holley system can be used on the stock TPI, essentially, as is. The Holley software is very user friendly too, there is a setup/startup wizard and you go from there. The new Holley system is easier and cheaper than going with an LSx engine, and keeps TPI like you want.

Re: Having a tough time finding someone to tune my turbo tpi setup

Ofcourse it depends on your future goals too. Sounds like you plan on building a stronger turbo mill and use the 305 for now to keep you running. You can go far on the ebl stock electronics systems no doubt but aftermarket may come in handy down the road depending on your goals

Re: Having a tough time finding someone to tune my turbo tpi setup

Yeah I’m really not looking to make crazy power. I just wanted to use the 305 to get it running right and work out the bugs and hope it lasts long enough to build a low compression forged internal 350 and even then I plan on buying a better turbo and still not really trying to break the 400hp mark. I wanted a little bit of power while still being reliable.
