7730 in 1988 TransAm

How do you physically fit a 7730 ECM in place of the 7165? I am in the preparatory stages of switching from MAF to SD mainly due to issues with ALDL disconnections and would like to know how the 7730 ECM can be made to fit. I am planning to use a racetronix adapter board not to hack the factory 7165 harness. Any pics of a completed install?

The 730 uses a different ecm mounting bracket than the 165

Ok from the photo it looks like it is still oriented vertically however the plugs go sideways rather than downwards. I assume wires would go towards the outside of the vehicle. Will probably fabricate something or adapt the 165 bracket.

Re: 7730 in 1988 TransAm

You correct, the plugs will come out the side.
you might look and see if he ships to you.

the 165 ecm bracket might be tricky to rework.
since the ecm uses clips with bolts to hold the ecm to the bracket.
the spacing is different compared to a 730.

Middle of the Mediterranean... I just shipped a 10" x 9" x 5" box weighting 2.5 pounds to Denmark today, $78 USD.

Can you link what you're using from racetronix to not cut the factory wiring?

Do you have to do repinning with that adapter or soldering or jumper wires?

Re: 7730 in 1988 TransAm

No repinning necessary. You just have to follow the 165 to 730 matrix and solder the wires from the racetronix board to the 730 plugs as per the various guides on SD conversion.

NOTE. I am still in the process of doing this so cant vouch for it but it seems to be pretty straightforward. I am still undecided on whether to completely disable Knock and LHM as I dont have a V8 memcal.

Wire the stock ESC module to pin B8 of the '7730. Then use the 7165 MEMCAL. Or at least a MEMCAL that doesn't have a knock filter on it.

Re: 7730 in 1988 TransAm

RBob, I actually saw somewhere around here in using an external knock filter instead of the memcal-based one but the OP didnt mention if he was successful or not. I will however do as you said as there is no harm in trying.

Would anyone know if it is possible to find a male delphi connector to plug into the MAF sensor plug? Would like to use it for the MAP sensor instead of splicing wires or passing new ones.

If not I also have the option of using AIR diverter wires as these arent being used now.

I think it was member @Blade09 that tried doing the external esc and tpi maf memcal in his 730 and ran into issues. I can’t recall what trouble he had.

Worst case I just get rid if the knock sensing feature altogether.

Re: 7730 in 1988 TransAm

Actually I do have a memcal with an on-board knock filter board however I do not know if it is good for my application. All I know is that it has an 'LT1' inscribed on the plastic connector but I am not sure if it is correct or not. I think the knock filter needs to match the engine no? Or is it just the knock sensor itself that has to match?
Also, this memcal doesnt have the LHM chips under the knock filter board.
Would appreciate some insight on it.

Re: 7730 in 1988 TransAm

The lt1 memcal doesn’t use the lhm resistors.
i don’t think adding the cylinder select jumper that that memcal will work .

Re: 7730 in 1988 TransAm

What about adding the 3.8K OHM resistor to bias the 730 ECM to match the 1990 onwards knock sensor and use the knock filter board in the picture? Would you think the 'supposedly' LT1 knock filter board would work or it is the actual filter that needs to be tuned to the engine not the sensor?
Re. the LHM chips I would use the one on my current 7165 and I shouldnt need the jumper for cylinder select.

Re: 7730 in 1988 TransAm

You wouldn’t need the cylinder select jumper using a v8 165 memcal.
i don’t know the answer on the 3.9k resistor. Just max out cts to enable knock.
