It is the stupid connector. There for those that don't want to do their own research, but want to be spoon fed...
RBob.
Hey, jerk. These things might be old hat to you but to some of us it is very foreign. Guys who own these cars ask these questions on other forums because manuals that are up to date and written for the layman are hard to find. Not many people to talk to about because these cars are 40 years or more old. We come here for help not attitude. Good for you, you have all the answers. I know you’d much rather answers on how to tune your precious EBL but some people have to wade thru wiring harnesses and hard parts before they get to the wondrous feeling of tuning with a laptop instead of using a screwdriver.
Get yourself a factory service manual and be done with it. It is obvious from the questions in your first thread here that you don't know a thing about these EFI systems. You really need to do some reading & research, otherwise you are not going to get this system up and running.
That’s a good idea. However, I know the basics and the general function but that is way different from seeing actual pictures of the actual components used. Auto manufacturers are know to switch parts in mid year, suppliers in mid year, etc. Type in MAP sensor connector in google and get pics of parts that kind of look what you have but it’s a different color or not quite the same shape. Did the OP use a Genuine GM part or some cheap alternative? So you are not sure so you come to the experts at TGO for some help. Snark and sarcasm are never helpful. I’m an older guy and I love to help guys on their projects. I make sure they do the work or most of it but I will gladly guide them. I looked all over for a definition of a EST bypass and what it does. Still looking. Dare I ask what it is or should I go “buy a book” at this early stage of just cleaning and sorting out a wiring harness? I’m nowhere near ready to put this on the car but I’ve got all the hardware sorted out and together, now it’s time to get the part of the project that scares most people away from these swaps, the electrical.
The factory service manual will answer every question you just posed. They are invaluable and can likely get one at a minimal cost on places such as ebay.
They are loaded with explanations of how each system works, pictures and diagrams of connector pinouts, connector and splice locations. For a '91 it will be over 2" thick and have thousands of pages. The index alone is 29 pages.
Thank you. I have the Assembly Manual, Factory Service Manual, Fisher Body Manual, and Heavy Service Manual for my Camaro and they were invaluable in helping me screw it together. I have often told people don’t even try to build one without the Assembly manual. I wasn’t sure they had that kind of documentation for the Third gens. I will definitely get one. Thank you. I appreciate the change in tone too.
you will be well served by getting a real service manual, you are right changes do happen year to year and i ended up buying the real service manual for each year... mostly the same but confident in knowing what is going on. you can get them from HELM or find them in other locations
your EST bypass will allow you to set the base timing, ie 6 to 10 deg typically... opening that connector basically disconnects the ECM from the advance equation ... the service manual will explain this and you will be able to see with confidence the schematic and understand what is going on
also even though this thread may have gotten off to a tough start, you would also do yourself a great service by putting in an EBL P4 as it will be much easier to quickly program with a lot of great features. i have several thirdgens using the EBL
Didn't expect this kind of flame job from a moderator, especially twice. Seems not posting an answer would have sufficed?
Paul, that wasn't a flame. The reality is, members need to take the time to research tuning and schematics. Understand the amount of time and energy that went into past write ups, only to be dismissed, ignored and questioned all over again as if they were never written. That is the insulting part if you ask me, especially to members like me when back in the day it was like pulling teeth to get people to answer various questions, they literally forced you to do your own research. Nothing is owed by anyone, this is a DIY community, remember? With the amount of knowledge RBob has given this website over the years, asking questions that were already covered, not to mention well documented, is kind of disrespectful towards the person that has given so much of his time and energy over the years. A simple search will give anyone what they need, because everything has been covered time and time again on this website. Just need to show a little effort...
Street I agree with your points but I didn’t say he (or anybody here) owes anybody any answers. Nor did OP ask R to respond exclusively so he wasn’t obligated to say anything. All I suggested is he just not post if all he was going to do was be shitty about it. Or skip the shitty and start with post 6. Thats a polite RTFM and helpful at the same time.
