How do you LINK to Craig Moates???
How do you LINK to Craig Moates???
I recrntly purchased an ibm think pad (233) and a cable from Steve Ruse. I have the cable installed correct, black to black & red to orange...pins a &M. Why can't I link up? I am running win ME and when I click on the folder, then click on startrun, the program operates fine off line. in diagnostics, i get the intro, then one line stating sending request: f4-57-1-0-B4 , then it states; Receiving Echo/responce:F4, 57, 1, 2, B4 . And that is it! I press 1 durring this time and nothing? I have done this and put a 10k ohm across pins a and b with the same results.
I am working off of Com 2 because my Thinkpad has com 1 reserved for the printer. I have removed my IR port because read that it can cause conflicts. I set CM software to com 2, 730 ecm, and have no idea what i am doing wrong? I am running ME, but it seems to run fine when i click on the startrun in the ecm850 folder i put in my documents.
Can anyone help?

Yes, it appears to run fine in WinME. However, the program needs to access the COM ports without layers of Microsoft Bloat. It cannot do that with WinME up and running. Boot up in DOS mode and it should work fine.
You'll also probably want to supply power to your adapter like we discussed, but first just try a DOS or Win98 boot disk. It's so easy, and could save you hours of sitting around asking yourself why it doesn't work.

I installed a 9 volt battery + a small swicth in the circuit (replacing the common 12 v connector to cigarr. lighter). When I ready with my laptop, I put the switch in ON and ... a lot of data is available....

mine is one of steves as well, I get the same "sending request: F4-57-1-0-B4" but the echo response says nothing.
I also dont know why my cable has a red a black and a white or grey colored wire. What the heck would that one be for? The moates software sez "try a 10K resistor between A and B" I did and no change. any ideas?

Tom,
most cables require three connections to the car. 12v power, ground to aldl connector (connects to ECM) and aldl data.
Also the 10K is for MAF (165) ECMs to force aldl data output. The 730 with SD aldl data is software commanded.

Just to make sure i got this right. Black is ground through terminal A. Red is Data through terminal E or M. White is supposed to go to terminal B but I don't know what it does. Is the 10 K resistor still required with Steve's cable? Does Steve's cable require the 12v if so where does that tie in?
