New guy playing with TPI PROM Burning

I want to let you all know that I am brand new to PROM burning so forgive me if I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I have an ’87 TPI 305 IROC-Z AUTO

I have been reading all about this stuff getting prepared for an engine swap to a 383. Before I do that I want to learn all about tuning the TPI system on my old motor just in case I really goof and things go BANG.

Here is what I have:

-165 ECM
-Delco ACXT 1099 Memcal
-Pocket Programmer 2
-WinBin
-ALDL Cable from AKM
-Craig Moate’s Software
-ZIF to ECM adaptor with 2 EEPROMs

Here are my questions:

-I don’t want to tamper with my original Memcal so How do I get the BIN that is in it now? I’ve tried dumping it with ecm851 (Craig Moates Software), but I don’t know the start and stop addresses and it fails very quickly
-What .ecu file do I use with WinBin when I do get the BIN?

I know these are simple questions, but I just can't seem to find my answers yet.

Thanks

I'm a newbie too!

I can't help with the dump, but the 6Ev009.ecu found at ftp.dyi-efi.org should work.

Actually, your 87 is a $32 ecu. The 1 i had to use with my 87 bin is $32bv001.ecu. You can also download other bins and use the $6 ecu file, but you have to change a few things in the bin to work in an 87. The $6e files use vats, and also, you have to change the opperation of the fan on the chip, from normally open, to unchecking the normally open flag.

You can get a breakaway header from radio shack.I suggest grabbing the image using them. After that solder a flash prom in the memcal and keep using the headers.I have had bad luck w/ cheap zif sockets. The 6E (89) code is better to start off tuning.

I think he will have to use a newer bin to use the 6e code tho. I have tried opening my 87 bin (abwn) with the 6e mask, and it wont open correctly. It gives me all kinds of weird values. I was assuming they arent compatable, but I may be wrong.

goneracin, your right the 86-88 is not the 6E mask.86-88 uses the
$32.I guess I should have said to use an 89 bin w/6E mask. jlamprecht, here is some stock bins to play with. You don't need YOUR bin to start with.

I tried my first PROM today. No luck though. I bought the ZIF adaptor from Craig Moates and I think I'm missing another chip. The memcal that was originally in the ECM had the 28 pin prom and it also had a 6 or 8 pin chip on the other side of the memcal. I don't know what it does but aparently something.

The ZIF adaptor has the 28 pin stop for the chip I burned in the Pocket Programer but the other side just has empty pins pointing off to the side.

Did I get the wrong chip? What do I need to do to fix it. When I turn the key on the fans start. The is the same thing it does with no memcal at all. Second, what is the location pin 1. I put it closest to the edge of the adaptor.

Thanks for you help.

P.S. I burned the ACXT.bin first just to take out another variable.

PP.S. kvu - Thanks for the bins. I'll try those next.

Don't worry about the other parts on the memcal. You just need to use the 28 pins from the prom to reprogram.

I don't use one but Craig can help you with that.

That just means something is wrong.I think you might have missed a step in the process. What chip are you using?Let me know if you get it going.

I'm using a AT29C256 (This number is from memory, I'll verify when I get home) EEPROM. I did clicked program in Pocket Programmer II and it said it was successful. I even did the verify and it said it was OK.

Let me backup a bit. I filled the buffer with 00 and programed it and then loaded the ACXT.bin. I then looked in edit buffer and the values had all changed to stuff other than 00 so I clicked program. I'm pretty certian that the chip is burned correct.

What I'm not sure about is:

1. I have a good bin file that is not corrupted during download. (I guess this could happen)
2. The ZIF-Adaptor is working properly.

Another assumption that I'm making is that I've installed the ZIF Adaptor the proper way. The big chip is on the same side of the ECM as the big chip was on the old memcal.

Also, what the heck does that little chip on the memcal do anyway?

Did you put your old memcal in the side of Craig's adapter? That's what those pins are for. You plug it into the side of the adapter, then plug the adapter into the ECM (the memcal will tuck in under the metal casing), then you put your EPROM in the top. He has pics of it on his website somewhere, but I don't know the address offhand.

When using the AT29C256 chip on a MAF car you need to open the Power Programmer then at the botom where it says start of device you need to set it to 4000 then it will work ffor you.

Thanks Synapsis and super83Z. You guys are life savers. I did both these things and my car started right off. Now I'm off to trying to use the 6$ code this weekend.

I'm going to unplug my nineth fuel injector and change my fan operation. Is there anything else I need to do with this code?

Wish me luck. This is exciting. When I tell my buddies what I'm tring to do they just shake their heads. We'll see what they do when I get it tuned properly.

Well I decided not to go to the 6$ code yet. The bin that I had downloaded was for a 350 and I'm not familiar with tweaking the prom yet to make all those BIG changes yet. Plus, what do all the coded b1, b2, b3, etec. flags mean in WinBin? I'm sure one of them is the fan operation that I need to change but I'm not sure which it is.

Anyway, I changed the Fan on and off settings and they worked so I was happy for the weekend. I did notice that the BLM at idle was 108. I read somewhere that it should be at 128 so I'll be looking into changing that on my 32B code next weekend.

if your BLMs were 108 at idle that means that you are rich and the ECM is pulling fuel. Your running MAF?right? the 165 ECM?

You are correct. Everything is stock. You would think they would come a little better tuned from the factory. Given everything is aged, but still. What do I need to modify to fix this? And what is the array name in WinBin using the 32B code?
