Where to get PROMs and sockets?

I know plenty of places to mail order from, but what kind of stores have flash proms and ZIF sockets? I tried compusa and they told me to order them. I would rather go somewhere after work and pick them up then wait 4 days and pay shipping. Thanks!

None that I've seen have them in stock.
Maybe used, but not new.

For the ZIFs, just use Digi-key.

I've got that stuff if you need it, save you some in shipping at least. Most places don't have stock regularly local.

You should look in the yellow pages under electronic parts supply, there should be some place that has a wide variety. Could end up stocking some Flash & ZIFs, might get lucky. Especially if you're near a major metro area. Call around, let your fingers do the walking...

I used JDR.. Such a ripoff.. Eventually I think Craig's gonna make me something custom. He doesn't know it yet though.

Soldering the ZIF to the memcal is kinda a pita.
THen again, I had a bunch of regular sockets on there first, so my memcal is a little melted and poopy..

Hey Craig, wanna solder a ZIF to a 2 foot cable (floppy might work - cut down 4 pins) for me so I can mount my ECM under the dash and have the ZIF accessible? haha

The 2-foot cable thing won't work well...yet... Working that one, with success on the horizon.

Your tale is one which drove me to make those ECM-ZIF adapters. Too many stories with mutilation and destruction at the headline...

Well, I shoulda left the regular socket on there. I can't get the ZIF to work. Checked continuity on each pin, works. Checked for a bridge accross the pins, none found.. But the car's rejecting the proms. (proms are fine, verified).

Either I somehow toasted the memcal, or the solder is causing too much resistance or something to that effect.. Weird.

Havn't gotten the cable to work (well) yet? The 730 swap article shows a remote mounted ZIF socket via a ribbon cable..

Well, I had a 27C128 working fine on about a 18" cable for about a year. Then when I moved to Flash PROMs (29C256) apparently the signal wasn't strong enough to go from the chip to the ECM across the cable.

Even the 27C128s were kinda squirrely sometimes. It might work, just not consistently with longer cable length...

Hey,

Well. I did a continuity test again.. Everything looks good. I think I mighta heated one of the other chips up too much on the memcal or .. something..? I dunno..

How do ya test a memcal? ya know.
