Need advice on burining first chip

I have read all of the introduction to chip burning articles and have decided to get into it. I have in my possession a pocket programmer chip burner, the tunercat software and the definition file for my car, plus two flash reprogrammable chips. I want to start by burning a simple chip that changes the easy things I have heard about

Injector constant ( I have just installed 24lb injectors)
Disable VATS
Lower fan temperature turnon point

I figure this will be a good exercise to get aquanted with the process. All the threads I have seen on here are way advanced for me so far, and I plan on getting into the tuning part, but how about just a quick explanation of how to do the above?

thanks

For injector constant, just find the "table" that has the injector sixe in it and change it to 24, should be under ECM constants table.Make sure you set the double and single fire flows to the same setting.
The VATS is under ECM switch table
Fan temp on/off's are also under the ECM constants table.

Thanks, sounds simple, of course so did installing the superram intake, Im into the second week of that (working a few hours per night after work). I would like to start some tuning with the chip burner but most of the threads on here read like chinese to me. Can you recommend a simple place to start or an article that gives simple instructions for beginning tuning?

Thanks again

Just Traxion's article on the main page.

What I did was to fire up the program and look through all of the options it has, play around with a bin, match the things mentioned here with the options in the program and ask lots of questions.

yeah, chip burning has a really hard learning curve, there are people that have no clue, people who are starting to get a clue (me), and smart guys like grumpy. I've been reading these forums for a few months now, and I'm just starting to understand some of this stuff. I recommend reading the tech article on the main page about doing the burning, read every link in that article, then come in the forums and search and search and search. Just think of things you want to do with the chip, and put it in the search. Also, reading the posts that the experienced people post and give us 'final answers' to helps alot for making the chips into 'english'

A good start and something that really helped me out was trying to learn the various hacks for each application. These hacks include the actual locations of the parameters your trying to change. I dont use Tunercat so i try to understand the basics of whats going on within the programming of the chip. The only other advice is to do alot of searches on this board youll be surprised how much info is archived in back posts. Expect lots of reading otherwise I would suggest to have someone burn it for you.

What exactly is a "hack"? I have tried to figure out what that means and I have seen it used in more descriptions than I can count. And I still don't know anything about it...

What does it mean? What does it do? Please, someone enlighten me.

Just to be on topic, I am also fairly new to the DIY Prom tuning. I thought I was doing okay until the cam swap and HSR!! Now its back to square one...

I 2nd an explaination of these hacks. From what I understand its supposed to be using the hexidecimal placement of the data in the prom instead of tunercat? (which in my opinion sounds like a whole lotta trouble)

If its trouble then use tunercat. The hacks are what the definition files are derived from.

By definition files do you mean the file you have to have to make TC work with specific ECMs? Like in my case I have a 730 ecm which uses the $8D definition file...Is that correct? By using "hacks" it sounds like you don't need TC...Is that correct? I am just trying to learn here, sorry if this is kinda basic...

I personally have a version of tunercat and still use winbin since I find it simpler to create my own definition files and its free. I believe another good free editor is gmecmedit which uses the same type definition files as winbin. That link I posted has the $8d hack and with a little reading and understanding you can pretty much break down how everything works and create your own definition files and have a greater understanding of what your changing and whats going on.
