WinXP and PPII users beware

For those of you running Windows XP and a Power Programmer II, beware when you have the automatic updates enabled. If you download the latest round of updates and install them, it could affect the PPII application and make it quit recognizing the parallel port. If this happens to you, unistall the updates, reboot, uninstall the PPII application, reboot and reinstall the PPII application. This should return the burner to normal operation. I talked to the guys at Transtronics and they said they had experienced a rash of calls on this and are working on a fix, but had not released it yet. The problem has to do with the driver version and hackers accessing your PC through an open parallel port. I placed a formal trouble report with them and they are suppoded to e-mail me a fix when it becomes available. Stay tuned.

It would help if you told us exactly what update does this. There have been about 5 in the last week for XP one of which was a security rollup consisiting of about 18 previous exploits.

I wish I knew exactly which one caused the problem, but I didn't take the time to uninstall the updates one by one until it worked. I needed to use the burner so I just uninstalled all the updates that were installed on the last go around. If I get some extra time, I'll re-install them one at a time and see which one crashes the burner, then post the info. The main reason I posted this was to warn poeple of the possibility of their PPII crashing and so they they wouldn't think it was a hardware failure.

I believe the poeple at Transtronics said the problem was only related to Windows XP Professional, but I can't recall for sure. I am running XP Pro.

New version I-PP2-1.92

Version I-PP1.92 has some extra stuff in the code that should fix the problems M$ threw our way (problem soved we think!). If you need a password, email us with the name you ordered under and your zip code.

I would like to get feed back (information@xtronics.com) on this new version – please note which OS you are running:

XP /XP-pro / ME / WIN2K / 98SE / 98 / 95

(Note that XP is not the same as XP-pro)

I would also like to have people test it while running Norton anti-virus – Might have fixed that one also.

PPII with XP Pro

Kudos to Xtronics for the fast response to problems caused by MS updates to XP Pro.

I have been doing a lot of forum searching and reading many, many posts to determine the best way to proceed with my foray into chip burning. From what I had found, I was ready to order a Pocket Programmer II, and then saw the post on problems with XP Pro with all new updates.

Since I'm running XP Pro, it caused a temporary delay in my decision (like 5 days). But Xtronics super fast response to this and their posting on this board is above and beyond customer service. Don't find a lot of that in today's world.

They made a believer out of me - I'll be ordering a PPII later tonight.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It is a pleasure to own a product that has this kind of support behind it. :hail:
And I didn't even have to post a follow up, you guys beat me to it.
