Make sure Moates' software is configured to the correct com port. You can check what com you laptop is running in the windows device manager.

I've never been able to have it connect in windows 98, I always have to boot the laptop in dos.

Check your COM port settings in Windows. Look at the Device Manager to see what port (COM1, 2, etc) your serial port is on. Generally, you will have 2 COM ports on a Win98 machine...sometimes more depending on hardware configuration. IIRC, the COM setting for a serail port will probably be COM1. You will also have a parallel port and if you have a printer, it will be named LPT1.

The parrallel port works because my Pocket Programmer works.

Com Port 1 is my communications port, and it also lists the LPT1 port. (COM1 is NOT disabled.)

In ECM852, com port number is set at 1.

But I still can't get data with windows operating.

Check the COM port settings like port speed, stop bits, parity, and flow control. Set FLOW CONTROL to "NONE" since that parameter is simply a "your side" control in a manner of speaking.

Flow Control: None

That's what it has.

Try changing the bps to a lower setting and work from there. I am not sure about your particular software setup, but starting from a lower speed and going up from there seemed to help me in the past.
HTH...

If you have a mouse in your serial port instead of the PS/2 or usb, it can cause conflicts. The old ones usually use a serial plug. You can get an adapter for a PS/2 port. If something is set to com 3, it will actually use com 1. Some modems will do this. Old ones again.

what you should really do is boot to dos and use ECM852 in dos mode. don't let windows interfere with the program's control of the com port.
