Troubleshooting 165 to 730 swap

Just got the car fired up but I'm having problems getting the scantool to work. It worked previously with my 165 on my laptop but now it's having trouble connecting. I don't want to run it much until I can get the scantool on it.

89 Firebird, 350 TPI.

This is with an AKM cable made for the 165.

Using Moates software 8.45, 8.50, 8.52, I press 1 on the keyboard to get a connection, and it sends the byte, receives something, and just sits there. Pressing 1 repeatedly doesn't do anything, and I need to press escape a bunch of times to get it to quit.

Any ideas?

I'm wondering if the 10k resistor is causing any problems, or if the E and M terminals need to be swapped. They seem to be connected inside the AKM cable so I don't think so.

might try taking out the 10k resistor the 730 doesn't need it.

Hmm tried that, things still aren't working.

It's frustrating because it was working for a few seconds, just enough to see I was running really rich.

So I've decided to rig up a test bench to try and get the cable working out of the car. Can anyone tell me what the minimum connections are to get data out of the serial data line on the ECM? I'm assuming 12V and ground would be enough but I don't know if the ECM will go crazy if it doesn't have anything else connected.

Thanks,
Alex

I'm using the AKM cable and a 165 to 730 adapter. I don't know how the AKM cable is wired inside but I had to add a pin M to the ALDL. Then, I jumpered it to the E wire which runs to the ECM. Works fine with Moates, Datamaster and others.

On the bench just power and ground is required. I like to run it to 3 or 4 of the ECMs pins that are used for that purpose.

Thanks.

I wired it up and got it to flash the trouble codes, I'm getting code 12 and 46. I assume that a code 46 (VATS) wouldn't stop the serial data from getting out.

I tried connecting the serial cable, it's not working on the 730 ecm but it is for the 165.

I'm going to see if I can borrow an oscilloscope from work, if not it's off to the junkyard this weekend. I wonder what the chances are that I get another broken ECM.

Did you change the setting in moates program to 730 ECM? Or did you just leave the setting for 165 ECM. If it works on the 165 ECM and not the 730 I think this could be your problem. If it is it is a nice easy fix. Just go into the set-up in Moates program and select ECM type 730.

Unfortunately I already did that.

Well it turns out it was the ECM I bought off ebay, Lesson #1, test things out right after they arrive, don't wait until a year later when you actually get around to the swap.

But my question now is about injector sizes. I've bumped my injector size up to 25lb/hr to get the blms close to 128 at idle. They're the stock injectors at 22lb/hr so this much change worries me. Am I being too fussy?
