Starting out tuning, w/ 3.1

I want to start getting into PROM burning, but it looks like all the topics I've read so far only detail TPI and TBI computers.

I guess my first question is, can I tune a V6? Sorry I'm a newb.

Secondly, if I start tuning I'm most likely going to get the Prominator. So If I get the Prominator, I still need a scanner, correct? I have a computer built into the dash running Windows 98, so I've got that part covered. It has both a serial and parallel port... and if I researched correctly the Prominator runs off the serial port, and the scanner off the parallel?

Next question, can I leave the scanner plugged in all the time giving real time updates from the ECM, or does the car go into Limp mode whenever it scans?

Thanks guys!

aren't the 3.1L MPFI v6's running off of the '730 ecms? (just like a speed density TPI). I think they just have a different programming and different memcal.. You should be able to tune it..

The Bin editing Software tunerPro has a ALDL scanner covered and also has PROMinator Support. Mangus (mark Mansur) is a Software Wizard in my opinion go here to get Info and His Software http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/

No Prominator support in TunerPro quite yet, but the next release will. Meanwhile, the stand-alone software bill supplies with the Prominator is quick and easy to use.

You have the ports backwards ... the scanner uses the serial port and the Prominator uses the parallel port. Other than that, you should be all good to go.

I have an ADS file (ALDL datastream definition for TunerPro) for your 6cyl car. Its available on the website.

I'd love to see a pic of your win98 machine integrated into your dash (I've been trying to think of clean ways to do this myself)!

Thanks for the info, everyone.

As for the indash computer, I should mention I have a 95 Camaro dash. I put the machine where the airbag used to be.

I was thinking about doing something similar and hinge the air bag cover and totaly hide it. But that is way in the future.
