Looking for some input on a project I'm planning on taking on. The general idea is taking a engine that was never offered as a injected engine welding injector bungs in the intake and using a throttle body for a air valve. I would be using all the sensors and wiring harness from a TPI donor car the engine is a 350 Olds with a mild cam and headers. Do you guy's think it would be possible to program a PROM to get this thing to run well and pass emissions?

And when you're done reading all the stickies and info you can get your hands on, I'd download a free copy of tunerpro, your ECU file, and bin. Then start tinkering around with that to get used to how everything is set up.

 

Intake conversion

TBI might be a little easier/cheaper on an olds. Single plane intakes aren't cheap for an olds IIRC. But you won't be limited by the intake if you go port inj.

Might look around, some of the caddy manifolds that were EFI'd might fit.
There's a pretty 71 Cutlass on LI with a 90 Camaro ecm running the EFI in it.

 

You might want to check out using a Megasquirt controller for your Olds. It might be less work in the end than trying to adapt a stock computer and wiring harness.

One of the knocks against Megasquirt is the lack of ignition control, but that will be addressed in the upcoming MegaSquirt-II upgrade. Check out that website -- lots of folks there adapting EFI to vehicles that never had it.

I don't know all your goals. But, on the surface, I'd agree with Z69 that a TBI system might be a good start. Fortunately, just about everything except the injector wiring should be the same for the conversion. All the sensors needed for the TBI will be the same as the port system you'd make. In the short term, you can get things like the fuel system hardware and wiring "bugs" worked out. And, this would let you start to get familiar with the FI tuning HW/SW while you're drilling holes in your single plane intake!

 

I did a conversion from carb to junkyard GM TBI on an AMC 360. I am considering the buildup of the same sort of project that you are talking about. Make sure you do your homework before digging into an EFI. Once you learn the basics, the rest will come in due time. The TGO DIY-PROM guys helped me out more than I can say. If you listen to what they say, your project will work just fine.
I will also agree with the other posters. The TBI is a better place to start. It will be much easier to graft onto the single-plane intake.

 

Thanks for all the input my eyes are now permently crossed from reading all the info available on this site and it's links. It sounds like there is a ton to programing a PROM properly and it's a little overwhelming but I'm learning.

Another one that o forgot too mention is the oldsglist. Its a mailing list and there is semi frequent discussion of the old caddy/olds intake with port and also the unbelieveably rare olds tbi intake the general was protoyping. couple guys on there running examoples of each.

Contact Ken Zink at hellcat1@ev1.net. He's settinng up an Olds 455 with port injection, but he's planning to use an Electromotive EFI system. He will let you know what he's doing for an intake and such.
