Car Will Not Connect ALDL
OK, here is the problem. I have been trying for the last few weeks to get my car to connect to my laptop. I am using WinXP Pro with SP2. I am also using a Radio Shack USB -> Serial Adapter. I am using a ALDL Cable from MaStach.com . I beleive everything is working because the ALDL Cable test software says it's ok. So everything from Software/Hardware side is ok I believe.
I have further tested my thoughts when I started up FreeScan. I have the correct COM port selected, set to 9600 with no Flow Control. I have tried with Hardware as well, no change.
When I try to connect I get nothing, I get the x80 x1 x29 x56 or something like that, Unrecognizable Header. Almost like it's just echoing what is being sent.
I have pulled out the ALDL cable from the port and just grounded the data cable to the ground cable. In the status window, I saw bytes coming in, like I was creating them by quickly making a binary data stream. Usually it was like ff or 00 but sometimes it would produce an 80 and there would be a message saying found start header.
I have a 1989 Iroc-Z MAF TPI 350 Car. I beleive it's a 165 ECU. On the chip it says AUJL. There is an orange wire going into the back of the ALDL Connector at pins E and M. I am connecting the Ground to pin A. I am connecting my Data wire to pin M. I also have a 10K Ohm resistor between pin A and B. I don't believe anything else is wrong. Please, I need help.
Thank you
Robert

I also had problems with Freescan. I gave up on it and went with Craig Moates software. Freescan looks cool but difficult to get connected. Try Craigs software found here http://www.moates.net/index2.html . It is called ECM852.zip

I even tried Craig's software with similar results. I have also tried TTS software ( I know it's BETA ) and even PCMCOMM. I even tried TunerPRO RT's ALDL scan tool. Nothing works. Please HELP! This is bugging me like no other.

Try disabling any kind of network, IR or PCMCIA card slot services that may be running at the same time.
I don't have XP so I don't know what basic items to tell you.
Something must be interacting. Maybe the USB->serial converter ?
Keep looking, Magnus has proven TP to work on the 165.

I have a compaq presario 900, running windows XP, and Im using the 'shack USB-serial adapter. I have WinALDL running fine on my 85 Vette- which is now using a 165 ECM- the same as yours. I can tell you it took a while to get mine sorted out. One major prob I had was that I was using a cable (built myself from the WinALDL schematic) that required an external power source. I put a cigarette light lug on it and plugged it in. Should be good right? Nope, Corrosion on the socket kept it from working.

Alright, recieved the Belkin Adaptor today, and guess what? Nothing. Notta, nil. The ALDL Test program won't even pass it. This is getting Frustrating. I guess I'm gonna have to buy Craigs USB Autoprom. Oh well. Can anyone else guess why this isn't working?
Thanks

its very likely that the adapter (driver) doesn't like to be opened at the required 8192 baud directly. 8192, in baud land, is a strange number. Craig does offer a direct USB->ALDL interface, such that you wouldn't have to use an adapter. =)
However, buy the AutoProm and you get a TunerPro reg included! hint, hint, nudge, nudge. ;-)
