Other Do it yourselfers. What types of techniques, software, and/or tuners that you have found to be the most effective way of tuning your car?

i am old school. i use winaldl( loaded tuner pro
rt yesterday!), windows xp on new laptop, efis aldl cable, Tunercat, 2732 chips, eraser, pp2. if i had to start fresh i would have selected a different ecu modded for serial adapter to aldl cable with Prominator. having ecu on floor of car is a pain. as is all the above. if you paln on being in hobby for some time invest in the best.

For starters, you're asking for blanket recommendations without even mentioning if your car is TBI or TPI. You're not helping us help you.

I'd suggest you start by reading through ALL the sticky posts in this forum, then do some searches on the hardware & software that's applicable to your ECM. Then browse your way through about the last six months or so worth of posts, for topics that relate to your ECM/engine combo, tuning devices, and methods.

If this sounds like it will involve some time and effort on your part, you're right. But there is a learning curve associated with EFI tuning, and not a lot of shortcuts IMHO. Kinda like learning a foreign language, you have to dedicate time to listening and reading before it'll start to make any sense.

Once you've done some homework, then ask specific questions, and you'll get better answers that you'll be better able to understand. This is not an attempt to brush you off, but the three questions you asked (especially the one about "most effective techniques") could fill a good sized book, and the answers would vary depending on your specific application.

I'll throw you a couple of bones though. For hardware, IMHO if I was just starting out, I'd probably lean towards the Autoprom. Or, if working on only one car, the Prominator would be a great choice. And if on a really tight budget, Moates' FnB is a low cost way to get started.

Software, start with TunerPro, also try WinALDL for TBI, or Moates' ECM for TPI. Those are all free programs, which is why I recommend them. There are some excellent commercial programs too, but the free stuff is so good that you really don't need them.

I apologize for not mentioning the characteristics of my vehicle. I have an 1987 Camaro L98, which is a 350 andthe fuel system is TPI. I am in the processes of rebuilding an engine and am about to put the motor back in. I just wanted to get some suggestions on what to use for tuning the rebuilt block and any other modications that I may add in the future. I am very big on doing what I can by myself because I just don't believe that if you take it to a garage they will put the same care into your vehicle as you would and just simply the benefit of learning my passion.

I have heard and read about Diacom Diagnostic Software and also EZ Link Diagnostic Pro Tuner Package but you can never go by what some other websites are advertising. Just wanted to see what those who have experience with DIY PROMs have to say.

PS. I like free stuff so I would have no problem going with a Tuner Pro, or any other adequate diagnostic software.

As Dave Jones said.

I started understanding english language, then, understanding EFI tuning language = learning foreign language x 2 . Then you can, you can...
