built a aldl cable
Made a cable this weekend for my 305 tbi. Cant seem to get the thing to work. It was ok for a da, would show 2 lines of info and nothing else. Then i tried to use it again and it shows nothing. I built it using the Winaldl pictures. It wouldnt show sensor data either. I built it to the exact specs using the same part numbers. Should I just go ahead and buy a cable? Was looking at Mastach.com

Alright, I love the views.....I mean replies.
Still cant seem to get this thing to work right. And today it kinda broke. The ends of the cable broke off from the serial connector. I think I am just not going to datalog and just drive the car now. I have spent well over $20 on making this thing, 10 goes to a soldering iron.

What year is your car, what ECM?
The specs on the WinALDL site work but are targeted at the slower baud ECM's. The newer two transistor style cable is still very simple to build.
EVERYONE that tries a cable for the first time seems to have some problem. Buying a cable does not ensure instant success. ALL of the cable companies use the same schematics you can find here on the DIY-Prom forum. They are not magicians.
Make sure your cable is correct and intact. Make sure you are getting power (12v) if using the external source schematic, otherwise make sure voltage is present coming from your computer (laptop not car) if your using the self powered version. Make sure your COMP port is selected accurately.
Most importantly, make sure you are jumping A to B on the ALDL with the 10K resistor or data will not flow. On 165's and maybe some others the 10K can be removed once data starts flowing.

Are you using a serial port? Never had any issues so far with 1 and 2 transister cables using a standard serial port.
