slight problem with gears....

alrighty, i have everything i need, and I'm ready to start my first tuning attempt. The car is a 1988 Formula, which started out as an L03/700R4 combo with 2.73's in the rear. it was swapped for an LB9/700R4, and the owner has no idea what the rear gear ratio is. A Posi rear was put in during the swap, and no one seems to know what gears went in. The owner thinks they may be 3.23's or 3.42's.

Do I absolutely, positively need to know what the ratio is? or can i get around it via tuning (i.e. trial and error)? I haven't picked up a BIN yet because of this.

other than that, are there any other tips/things I should look out for?
