My Cold Start Injector/CSI completely malfunctioned this weekend and is dumping raw fuel constantly. I brought it into a mechanic yesterday to fix it and take care of some other items. I'm a Newbie with the Camaro and am desperately trying to band-aid several issues at once so I can enjoy the car.
I just figured out that I can bypass the CSI if I use a different prom chip, but I don't know where I can get one FAST so I can drive my 88 IROC 350 by this weekend.
How do I quickly locate a chip that bypasses the 9th injector while I start the learning process of 'burning my own'? I don't have VATS in my 1988. If I find an 89' chip, does it matter if that car had the VATZ???
Thank-You, Nitro

Pulling the 3 Amp fuse from the fuse box will disable the 9th injector from opening. It is not controlled by the ECM. It is controlled by a sensor on the front of the TPI manifold next to the coolant temp. sensor.
I am confused about what you are actually saying. Is the cold start injector leaking or is it being forced on electrically? Do you want to elimate it or just not turn it on?
It will run without the 9th injector and with out the 3 Amp fuse. so you don't need a new chip "fast".
If you do install a 1989 bin (w/o cold start) make sure to disable VATs and flip the A/C polarity switch.

It's been a good 15 years since I had my last Camaro- I just got this one at Christmas from my wife: I'm just not familiar with GM products, thus the needed learning curve is really steep on this poorly maintained IROC. I didn't know till this morning that I could even bypass the CSI, and the mechanic shop was stalled as they couldn't find a replacement part (yet, they're supposed to be the TPI specialists in my county).
I didn't know there was a fuse or that the 350 would run without the 9th. I have no idea if it is leaking OR being forced on- it's been intermittent since January, progressively getting worse till it's mostly running raw fuel into the cylinders. I'm not throwing any codes and this morning when they started it, the injector worked perfectly....
I definitely want to get rid of the item all together AND would really like to get a chip made that turns my radiator fans on earlier, to match the SVO injectors I just got (24#), and reset the basic spark-curve.
I thought about stopping in at a wrecking yard nearby, but since I don't have VATS, I didn't know if this means that a chip from an 89 350 needs to not have had VATS?
I've spent over 20 hours using SEARCH and have never run across the item: "switch the A/C polarity". That's also new to me!
I love to learn, but this car needs so many things replaced and updated that I'm spinning wheels a lot. How do I locate someone to 'burn'%* a chip for me without violating the prom begging request????? I won't have time to learn that area for several months yet (just had major spine surgery and it's a slow recovery).

Just unplug the injector connector to the 9th. If it is leaking then this will not solve the problem.
I went to the 730 ECM and just unplugged mine and it is running fine. I think there would be a option in the chip to zero out the 9th injector from opening at all but I don't know where it is since I have not worked on a MAF cars chip.

IIRC, the cold start injector only recieves power during cranking, so its probably hanging open, if it does it intermentently I'd run several tankfuls with SEAFOAM or some other good injector cleaner. The hard part for you is capping the 9th inj fuel line if it is leaking, the chip part is pretty easy(if you have the equipment, burner, eprom, adaptor), just burn a stock 89 bin with vats disabled and tune from there when time permits. I think all stock 89 eprom's had VATS, so they wont work for you
.
This might be the perfect time to read up on prom burning since its not to physical of a thing. Read the stickies and search your ecm. Figure out the type of equipment you want to use or what your wallet allowes, from simple datalog cable and burner to some form of emulater. I first bought an AutoProm and later I bought a BURN1 so I would always have a reader/burner at the house when the autoprom was in the car for datalogging or emulating. This stuff makes alot more sense once you get some hands on hardware to play with, but watch out its addicting and fun,
I'm already getting quite a collection of spare eeproms, burners, adaptors and an ecm bench now, best money I've spent.
Download TunerPro(free, if you like it pay the man) and the files for your car and start learning how to edit your bin.
Checking out Craig Moates website will also make this stuff easier to understand and has lots of nice products
.
edit. Also check your fuel pressure regulator vacuum line for a fuel leak there.

Hey Plow Boy, Yep, I had already checked the fuel pressure regulator. Since I wasn't throwing any codes I went there first. Thanks though, not many people know to do that.
I spent a couple hours reading through PCMforless.com site and it got my attention. I'd rather learn how to do my own and appreciate you mentioning what equipment you started with. For the price of a used set of header; it sounds like the right investment.
I'm having the plenum cleaned, adjustable fuel pressure regulator installed and an inline fuel pressure guage mounted today. Unfortunately the ACCEL guage is showing 7 pounds off from the shop's regulator- I keep chasing my tail so fast with this car, good thing it's not a daily driver....!!
IROCZinOZ, was that a typo error: "If it is leaking this 'WILL NOT' solve the problem???
Thanks guys; Really Thanks! Nitro

Symantics.... he's talking about the Normally open fan request bit.
The vette bins and FB bins have that bit set opposite of each other.

Yea I just mentioned Craig's stuff because thats all I've used and am kinda familiar with, I have his adaptors, chips and burners for my 730ecms, very good quality equipment to me anyway. I just wish my car was finished so I could tune again, its been a 1-1/2 years since I got to drive the old girl, I spent a couple hours reading through PCMforless.com site and it got my attention. too many projects not enough time or money.Quote:

That sucks, I hope its not your guage.I'm having the plenum cleaned, adjustable fuel pressure regulator installed and an inline fuel pressure guage mounted today. I think he meant that if the injector was stuck open, using a different chip would not fix it because its a mechanical problem not an ecm problem. Does it run rich only after a cold startup and not after a hot start? If thats the case it might work using a 89bin and unplugging it, that way it will never open up and have a chance to hang open.
Get some good injector cleaner ran through your system, cant hurt. I bought a tbi camaro once that had sat in a barn for atleast 3 years and the injectors had gummed shut would not flow nothing, I took the top off the throttle body and sprayed carb cleaner in the passages, while I cycled voltage to the injector with a 9volt battery until I could hear it clicking, put it all back together, dropped a can of SeaFoam in the tank and is still running good today, that was 5 years ago.
