Purchasing PROM burning equipment for TBI

Hi, I have a 350 TBI that I'm sure is hampered by the state of its current electronic tune. I'm ready to drop some coin on some equipment and learn how things are done, but the information I come across through searching and tech articles appears to be dated and just wanted to run everything by you guys before I made the purchases.

I understand I need this, is it still the best way to go?

The Pocket Programmer

I also understand that I need to buy an extra chip or two. I definitely want to go with flash proms so I dont need to deal with an eraser. Tech article says the chip I need is AT29C256. However, it mentions this is for TPI and doesnt say anything about TBI. My ECM is the original correct factory one. I read that I need an adapter for the chip to work in my ECM. I read up on this, and it just confused the heck out of me. I need to solder in an adapter so I can use AT29C256 (electronically erasable) chips in my 1228746 ECM? Soldering is no big deal, just want to make sure i've got this down right.

Will this programmer be a better choice if I plan on using flash proms?

BURN1 Flash-n-Burn USB-Based Chip Programmer [BURN1] - $85.00 : Moates.Net

I will need to buy an ALDL cable for datalogging. Is there any other hardware required for datalogging? Or do I just need this cable and a laptop on the passenger seat?

ALDL OBD1 OBD cable OBDI OBD2 engine codes

So yeah, given that I have a laptop, and all software aside (I just want to get the hardware ordering out of the way first) there are 4 major things:

Programmer

ALDL Cable

Extra Chips

Adapter to use 29C256 chips in 1228746 ECM

So am I ready to go? Or did I miss something?

Pardon the redundancy, I feel like an idiot for posting this because I believe that its all right here in front of me, I just need some first hand reassurance that i'm heading down the right path

Check out Craig Moates at DIY Fuel-Injection Tools:
Created by an EFI enthusiast for EFI enthusiasts like you! : Moates.Net. He's got everything you need there to get going. I'm in the same boat now, just ordered and received burn1 unit along with adapter, zif socket and extra chips. As far as the programming is concerned there's lots of reading in the stickys.

Start with a basic one at a time chip burner and work your way from there.

The farther you go from this path is more $$$ you will spend.

Start slow take notes, change one thing at a time.

Best path to take for a newbie and you seem to be grasping it.

Where can I buy the adapater to plug the 19C256 chips into my stock ECM? I cant find it on the Moates site............
..............is this it?

S2 Aries 28-pin ZIF Socket [S2] - $10.00 : Moates.Net

And also, are these the kinds of chips I need to buy? It doesnt say 29C256, but it does say it is a direct replacement for them...

C2 SST 27SF512 Chip [C2] - $5.00 : Moates.Net

Thanks again.

The adaptor is the G2 with .6" spacing. This allows the '256 or '512 chip to plug into the ECM.

If you are serious about wanting to make some power and obtaining a good tune with the TBI, consider the EBL setup. Right off no need for the adaptor or an ALDL cable. Just a burner, some chips and a laptop. Everything else is included: logger, ECU/XDF files, documentation, analysis software. . .

Your engine will run smoother and stronger. And get better fuel mileage.

RBob.

{edit: also keep in mind that by not requiring a chip adaptor and an ALDL cable you are saving nearly $100. That makes the EBL setup even less expensive. Big bang for the buck. }

RBob I sent you an email about the EBL.

Are there any consumers floating around these forums I could talk with about it?

Received/responded to the email. For some current users check out these threads:

(The N2O thread puts a smile on face everytime I read it )

Darkshot, the EBL is the way to go!! I am reletively new at tuning and I am glad the EBL came out when it did. I go the G2 switching adapter and all that stuff, but my engine is modified, the EBL fits it better. just my .

So I've loacated this EBL setup, which for new users is available at www.dynamicEFI.com

I have many questions as to how this works. It appears to be a graphical data logging program, but on the website, it mentions making modifications. Does this program interface with some type of chip burner?

Yes, you will need a chip burner. This "daughter" board is installed like it says on RBobs site. You would get a generic bin file that works with the EBL. My car started right up and idled @650 RPM. With all the mods it has, this was great. (i could never get to idle below 1000 in park before). But you need a chip burner of some sort, I personnaly an using the AUTOPROM from Craig moates. I can emulate and make changes on the fly. Different people are using different things. This is just me. And FWIW, the EBL is worth EVERY penny. Tuning a hopped up TBI motor now with out it is like trying to have 2 wives.
